Correct neck size chamber for 6.5 x 47 Lapua brass with 120gr scenar bullets

Neck thickness x2 + bullet dia. + desired clearance = chamber neck dia.

IE: neck thickness of .015" x 2 = .030"
Bullet dia. =.264" + .030" =.294"
+ Desired neck clearance of .003" now brings you to .2970" (this would be a generic "no turn neck" for the caliber you mentioned")

Same math applies to any cartridge , however the neck clearance number may vary depending on personal preference , some calibers require more clearance and some don't.

More clearance equates to more working of the neck of the brass during resizing but too little can be bad juju and cause erratic performance that can be hard to nail down.

I had a .295" neck in a chamber, that and coupled with a Redding bushing die donuts formed immediately. By the 4th firing there were chambering issues. .293" has worked here for many chambers.

Sounds like you need to turn necks for a .013 neck thickness. DO NOT take my word for it. Measure for yourself!

My reamer shows a neck diameter of .2944 and it works fine with Factory Lapua 120 grain 6.5x47L.

Okay guys, I made a mistake about my neck clearance with the .293 reamer/neck. My unturned brass loaded With a 140 hybrid measures .290. Sorry for the mistake.

Again , remember my math above was based on a .015" neck thicknes.. Forming cases from something else or different lots of lapua will differ. I prefer to turn necks to .013 or sometimes .012" as i prefer a bit more clearance with this cartridge as opposed to say a smaller milder cartridge.

I asked Kelbly's for a tight, no turn neck in my barrels. The reamer print they provided shows a .293" neck. It works great with unturned necks as well as necks turned to full cleanup.
