Coroner’s report: 40gr overdose

No exciting tale, just a young innocent female wandering the woods unchaperoned. Her family will probably start a “go-fund me” page. But in the end, the buzzards will eat good. The fawns, rabbits, turkey and grouse poults will maybe breathe one more day.

I don’t know which 40 grainer you used, but nothing seems to knock a coyote flat like a 40 gr Nosler BT at max 223 velocity. The first one I shot hit the ground so fast that I thought for a second that maybe I missed. Maybe it’s because the whole energy dump stays in the coyote, rather than the tree on the other side of it.

Bo, 200 yards and beyond will teach you a different story. 40g bullets bleed energy fast, thus the hydrostatic shock goes down the drain along with penetration.

I had more coyotes get knocked down and hobble off with 40's than any 22 caliber bullet I shot.

If you are a speed freek, the 45g Sierra high velocity spt is the best of both worlds, other wise, I stick with 55's. In the 223, the 55g Sierra Lead tip Blitz loaded with a hot load of Benchmark, cci 450 is doing 3450 in Rem 700's and this load just about cuts a coyote in half! You will have to see it to believe it!

I must legally use lead free now in my communist state of Kalifornia, so I use the 32 grain lead free Nosler tipped. Works great in all my 20 caliber rifles from 20SCC, 20 Tac & 20-223AI. Enters and does not exit, just blows up inside and gels the internal organs.

It was a Nosler, mostly because I still have a few, my night gun is sighted in for them, and provided I do my part, a call to the undertakers(buzzards) is a normal course of business.

Agree with your assessment on the range limitations. Night gun 40’s, day gun is usually stoked with 69TMK. Really tough for them to stroll away from a well placed pill.

Not questioning your selection of reliable friends, but I can vouch for the buzzards(turkey & black) in my area. They will clean up a coyote in a matter of days. I'll try to drop a photo or two later.
Good, reliable friends tell me that buzzards won't eat a dead coyote. Professional courtesy.
Check out my “Dining at the Morgue” post.
It was a “standing room only” buffet!

Based on my observations of the last 15 years at our Texas place, buzzards truly love pigs, skunks, and coons. Coyote isn’t the favorite, but they will eat it. I get the feeling that when they come across a dead coyote, they aren’t that excited, but hungry is hungry.

They seem to savor the ones I prepare. Maybe because there aren’t very many of their preferred menu items lying around my place.
Either way, I’m sure glad for the cleanup crew.
