copying Corbon's .284 hunting ammo

I am doing some reloading for a friend. He has a browning lever gun in .284 winchester. The gentleman he recently purchased the gun from gave him one box of Corbon Hunter deep penetrating ammo loaded with 140 gr Barnes tsx bullets. I tested the ammo for accuracy and it shot an impressive group, considering how ruff the bore looks. I contacted Corbon who informed me that they still make the ammo but are currently waiting on bullets, but at $82.16 a box of 20 my friend would not buy from them.

So here is what I know so far from taking down one of the rounds. The primer is Federal GM210, The bullet of course is a Barnes 140 tsx, brass is winchester. But the big question is what powder? 52.50 grains (ball) is what the load weighed for the round I took apart. I do not have a Barnes reloading manual and the Barnes internet page only gives two suggest powders, one is reloader 17, so not that one. And the other is Hunter, but does not have the velocity that the Corbon does (2900) out of 24" barrel. The gun I have has a 20" barrel. I have not got a chance to chrono graph the said load yet out of the gun I have, so I don't have that info.

So what powder (ball) 52.5 grains produces 2900 roughly with a 140 tsx bullet out of a 284? Thanks for the help!

I'm not manufacturing to sale, I'm just reloading for a friend.

Thanks Lapua40x! Win 760 was what I was thinking would be the ticket.

Really!? Are you just here to bust my balls :o? statement corrected.

Normally people thank me for keeping them out of jail.

Personally, I don't care in the least whether you make and sell reloaded ammo, or moonshine, or cigarettes, or suppressors, or anything else. The BATFE doesn't share my laissez-faire attitude, though.

If you have any of the carbon left, shoot it over a chronograph to get the speed. That should give you a rough idea of the range the guns likes. From there, work up a load with the powder you can get your hands on. I prefer stick powder over ball powder, but that's not to say the ball powder won't work.

As for the other comments, I wouldn't worry too much about litigation. If they locked anyone that loaded a few rounds for a buddy, we'd have to turn the entire state of Texas into a prison. Sorry for thingy giving you grief, not all of us here are like that.

I cant find the data for the 140tsx in my manual but in that weight range h-414 seems to be a good choice. It does have a listing for the 130 grain Barnes x solid. Don't know if that will help any. But that would be the powder I would look at.
