copper remover

First, you can talk to a dozen smart shooters and get a dozen answers.

Here's our take on things--
For a good, custom hand-lapped barrel, Wipe-Out is all you need when shooting the small and medium cartridges at "reasonable" velocities. Prior to applying the foam, run 2-3 wet patches down the bore to get out the soot and loose carbon so the bubbles can go to work. Using this method, I've never had to use a brush in my 6BR's PacNor SuperMatch barrel, honest), and the gun comes back to zero within a couple shots after cleaning.

If you need faster cleaning, without the dwell time required by Wipe-Out), try Montana xTreme 50BMG, Tom Meredith's TM Solution, or Bore-Tech Eliminator. Sweet's 7.62 is also very strong.

Of 50 BMG, Bill Shehane wrote: "It's the best copper cleaner that I've ever tried. The older I get the less I like to clean and the more I like to shoot. I want something I can break-in barrels with quickly and maintain them in copper free / carbon free condition after lots of powder and long heavy bullets lay the fouling to it. I have used them all and they all work to get the job done. Some better than others and some faster than others. But none as fast as Montana Extreme 50 BMG. I use a Hawkeye [bore-scope] and see no need in leaving the solvent in overnight on the nastiest barrels. I have never had one that two trips with the 50 BMG didn't do the job and most never take over one trip. Even when breaking in barrels, one treatment is usually enough. I know they say [50 BMG] has oil in it but I ALWAYS follow with 1 patch of Montana Extreme oil."

When using 50 BMG, you'll want to keep the cap on--the formula can lose some of its effectiveness if left open. While you should patch the 50 BMG out after use, prolonged contact with the barrel does not appear to be harmful. Rich DeSimone wrote: "Since I have been using Montana Extreme products, and I love the 50 BMG) I do not even use a brass bore brush. On occasion, I use one of Danny Huffman's nylon bristle brushes. I constantly leave 50 BMG in my bore for days. Normally I run a couple of patches with 50 BMG thru my bore after a match and take the rifle home whereupon it sits in my cleaning cradle until I get the chance to finish cleaning it."

Wipe Out has another product that you use with it to accelerate the action so it only takes 20-30 minutes to do a bore that hasn't been neglected, such as after shooting 20-30-40 rounds. I love the wipe out and haven't used the accelerator yet. JimDee

I have used many but at the suggestion of a Sinclair's person I tried Butch's. It is great. It has taken the place of three cleaners on my shelf. It is hard to believe how fast it removes copper.

Hi in a heavily fouled factory barrel i believe the best is the Montana 50BMG it realy gets the copper and powder fouling out if you have a good match barrel that does not foul much the Montana Extreem is all you will need but i am using the 50BMG for everything it gets every thing out i use molly and afoer patching out the 50BMG i apply some Montana Bore Conditioner to a patch and leave it in the barrel then before a shoot i patch out the excess oil with 1 patch and start shooting the first shot is verry clost to where it should be. This has made it much easier with long VLD's that tend to foul when pushed hard also the 162gr A Max in a 7mm SAUM i shot will foul badly even with molly 2 aplications of 50BMG cleans the barrle verry well.

I've tried them all and BMG 50 has everything beat, hands down. I do not use brass brushes on my match grade barrels, but rather heavy weight nylon bore brushes available from Brownell's. I've used BMG 50 at the range to break in new barrels and at home for regular cleaning. I've had good luck using Forrest Bore Foam and Wipe Out, but they take longer and I generally leave the foam in overnight. Whatever method I use always ends with several dry patches followed by two patches wet with denatured alcohol followed by two more dry patches. This ensures all cleaning solvent residue is removed. The last thing I do is to run a patch saturated with Lock-EEze through the bore and let the barrel dry muzzle down. The first shot from a cold bore is right where it should be.

I have let MX 50bmg soak for hours and still leave traces of copper...not sure why as nasty as this stuff smells...even with brushing...

I still like it for cleaning quick, but was a little dissapointed at the copper streaks left.

a wipeout soak is all that i have seen that will take it all out.

FYI: RE: 50bmg...new bottle, only opened to insert dropper, so its strength shouldnt be compromised.

If I have a stubborn factory barrel, I will use the 50BMG. If I am using a good aftermarket barrel the 50BMG will still work, but I find myself using the TM Solution for the large majority of my barrel cleaning needs. Personally, if I have a REALLY stubborn barrel, I will use the Outers Electronic Foul Out. I have found nothing that will clean copper, or lead, better! With the use of the Foul Out, there can still be "traces" of a copper coloring present, and I have found that this coloring does not do any harm, or affect the load. If you have problems with a carbon build-up, then you will want to use the TM Solution since it is very aggressive on carbon.

Just ordered some Wipe Out from Mid South a sponsor here. I am going to try it in a Sako barrel too. I was nearly out of my Shooters Choice anyways.

BTW- Mid South had Hornady 50 grain V-Max ammo for $10.89 a box ! I normally pay $14.99 a box from my local shop. Nearly 30% savings ! I guess I better wake up and start using the net more for that kind of savings. Shipping was not high either and gas driving to the shop not cheap.

I noted : That I found them here at 6mm BR

Mopro-7 to remove carbon,then JB paste,then Alcohol,then Wipeout.

I am so tired of very toxic smelling chemicals, especially when cleaning guns in small motel rooms when shooting out of town.

Today received 50 BMG,tomorrow test the 50 BMG.
I have notice that 50 BMG has a very very strong smell,be careful if you smell on the bottle, i have it experience :o

The gentleman who runs MPro-7 said they are coming out with a new copper remover that will be the fastest remover around and non-toxic. He said they can't believe the results that are seeing. I will certainly order a bottle to try, althought I really have no complaints with Wipe-out for home use and Butch's for field use.

Kory,
That is great news about the addition to the Mo-Pro line. I really like non toxic cleaners. Did he say when it would be on the shelves?

Chuck

Chuck,

I talked to him,I can't remember his name) about 3 months ago and he said it would be out in a month, from then). I checked their web site recently and did not see any information on it, but that doesn't mean its not out yet. Every time I remember to give him a call, it is after business hours. I'll try calling again in the morning. I'll also check Brownell's web site since they carry his other products.

Regards,
Kory
