Cooper Firearms

Hi from over the pond, I'm new to the site and have been reading some posts and what a pleasure it is to look through, some knowledgeable people on here which makes the reading all the better.
Anyway, I have just ordered a Cooper rifle, it's in 6.5 x 47 flavour but only has a 1 in 9 twist? I assume that the optimum bullet weight will be about 123 grain but what do you think? Further to this what do people in the states think of coopers in general? It's a fair wait before delivery, (7 months) I hope that it's worth the wait! :)

I bought a Cooper Model 21 in 6 PPC back in 2005.....It could not be outshot by anything less than a custom PPC....Best factory gun for the money..LT

I purchased a Cooper MTV in 6BR about 4 months ago, it is a joy to shoot and is much more accurate than the operator! The only problem is that now I what to order another one.

Good shooting and it will be worth the wait!

Scott

I have two Cooper rifles....a 17HMR and a .204...BOTH are tack drivers....You will NOT be disappointed ;D
BTW, how do you manage to own a rifle in the UK??

What do you mean? I have several rifles, most of my friends have rifles too.

I have a Cooper in 6.5x55 with a 1 in 9" twist, and it shoots the 120, 123, and 140gr SMKs just fine. No issues stabilizing the 140gr with the relatively slow twist.

Coopers are very well built; I think you'll be pleased. I plan to pick up another one (or two).

It's good to hear so many positive comments, I am looking forward to getting it now, I intend to use it for longer range stuff, mainly rabbits and foxes up to about 800 yards, just need to get a scope sorted for it now. I also have 2 Howa's, a 243 and a 308, I use the 243 for foxing and deer and the 308 just for deer, contra to popular belief these two rifles are tack drivers and when I found the load that suited them they really do preform. If the Cooper shoots as well as they do I'll be delighted. I hope that it will shoot better but this is a group with the 308 at 100 yards, open field.

Hi radshooter, here in the UK anyone who can prove to the local police force area that he/she needs a rifle for competition/hunting and is either a member of a club or has the owners permission to shoot on his property, then you obtain a firearms certificate which lasts for 5 years, and is then renewed usually without any problem.
I think that the only exceptions are that anyone with certain serious court convictions is not allowed to own one, but you need to have 2 referees, one being a club official and also a personal referee who is not a family member. Plus you have to provide information on who is your Doctor as the Police can approach him/her to find out if you have any mental disorder that could preclude you owning a firearm.
On filling in your application form, you can just put down what calibre(s) you want but on the initial application the police will try and limit the amount of firearms you can possess, but over the years you can increase this quantity.
The local police then visit your home to check to see if your security is up to scratch, and then if your referees have been approached to find a bit more about you, your firearms certificate arrives in the post. You can then purchase whatever is on your certificate.
We are not allowed to possess semi automatic rifles or handguns apart from black powder types plus what is now called long barrelled revolvers/pistols which are over a certain length and have a wrist brace attachment to the hand grip to make them difficult to conceal.
Here in the UK there is pretty much standardisation of the application of the law for every police force area but maybe in the States each state has it's own set of rules which can be confusing.
Good shooting.

Hi, new here.

You are quitre correct. I see it as every Englishman's duty to acquire as many as possible!

We're from the same part of the world, it seems.

I used to shoot with Les (Geordiesniper) years ago in the same club, but lost touch. It was through him (and reading Laurie's' articles) that I saw there was more to shooting than .303 and black powder.

English Chap,
Welcome to the forum, I have owned several cooper rifles and they are very accurate and beautiful crafted rifles. I doubt I would buy another one as for the $ you could have a total custom made, if I were from England I don't think I would look any further then right there as some of the most elegant rifles I have ever seen were made there but if a Cooper is what you want I don't think you will be disappointed with it's looks or performance,....Cheers ;)

Got it....I knew that there are strict gun control laws in UK and guess I was thinking about restrictions on handguns....read somewhere that they may even ban ownership of starter pistols for fear they can be converted to real gun.

In US, gun laws vary by state.....in all states except IL, you can own and carry handguns :)
Where I live, anyone can buy a rifle provided they pass the instant gun check (store owners call in to a number and they do a computer check).

Happy shooting..I am sure you will love your Cooper ;D

Ah, it's Les. Yes, never seen him in years either but spoke on the phone a few weeks back.
