Cooper 20VT & 221FB in the Rat Patch

Rick in Oregon

Rat season is here, and we've been doing our best to empty rifle brass for the landowners. My good friend, Steve just acquired a nice new-to-him Cooper M38 in 221FB. Great wood, stainless fluted barrel, shoots like a house afire.

Recently we spent a good day in the field shooting squirrels, and had the added bonus of a few jack rabbits to add to the mix. Here's a shot of the setup that day...perfect weather, accurate rifles, good friend along and a target-rich environment. What more could a guy ask for?

Steve's new M38 Cooper in 221FB. Great wood, and she shoots as good as she looks:

Looking downrange; the fence line is right at 265 yards and completely infested with squirrels. Using my Cooper M38 in 20VT, it was hard to miss at that range, and rats flew at virtually every shot....great fun!

We'd be scanning for squirrels, then in the top of our scope's view, we'd see a jack rabbit sneaking about in the sage along the fence lines. Here's Steve coming back to his bench with what would become the three "Bunny Amigos":

After shooting squirrels for a few hours, seeing a jack rabbit seemed like "big game" in comparison to a ground squirrel. The Three Amigos after receiving their daily dose of both .20 cal 32gr SBK's and 40gr .224" Nosler BT's:

My Cooper M38 20VT cooling off between strings. "Scooter" as she's affectionately named, did quite well that day with a hit ratio right at 97%....a very good day for me.

Here's Skippy after dealing with one my my 32gr SBK's at 246 yards. About as good performance as a guy could ask for, and a nice blood spray to boot. (Although the rat may not really appreciate the "nice" part and feel quite differently...... ;) )

Yours truly with one of the unluckiest rabbits in the county that day. 20VT at approximately 246 yards:

After launching to dramatic heights, Skippy back on the ground showing he had a good time indeed. Only problem is: he only gets to do it once.

And just for fun, proof that a good time was had in the field that day:

With the ranges that day being mostly under 500 yards with available targets, I never uncased any of my 204's, saving them for the work over 400 yards. The 20VT and 221FB did everything we asked of them that day, and used less powder to get the job done. It's great launching rats all day using only 18.5 grs of powder from that little FB case. But as the season gets hotter and the rats get twitchier, there's no doubt the 204's WILL get their time in the sun! :D

Oh, how I love this time of year!

Keep up the good work Rick......

Hopefully things will work out differently next year and I`ll be able to lend a hand............

Phil.

Rick,

Always enjoy your posts here and on Saubier. You and Steve did have a great day with your Coopers!!

Thanks you guys.

It's been a pretty good year for squirrels and rockchucks. Now I'm just wishing it wasn't 100*F outside, as the chucks are still up, but down early due to the extreme heat we're having here in the PNW at present.

I'm guessing that deep down in their rock piles, they enjoy the cool and avoid the blazing sun past 09:00. Same goes for the squirrels....once the First Cut is complete, you only get about an hour of good shooting till they all go down for the same reason. They need to take lessons from PD's, as those buggers stay up even in the heat.

Here's one I spied not far from the house earlier this week....only wish I had my rifle handy that day.

You eastern guys....keep those pics coming, as your guys stay up much longer during season than ours do!

Here in Virginia any time of day is a great time to kill a chuck! I have took most of them in the evening tho.

Good pictures! ! Keep them coming!

Hey Dan, are you just figuring that out? Must not have one.....yet! The only thing I'll add is that the 20-221AI (20SCC) is just a good bit better, and in a little larger cartridge, the 20-223AI. I am finding significantly better performance along with better brass performance with the 40 degree AI versions without having to push the cartridges very hard at all. Only problem is dies have to be custom, but CH4D or Whidden's can take care of that, and with the 20-223AI you can use a Redding 223AI type "S" FL die with 20 cal bushings. I used to think that 4,000 fps was out in space somewhere, but these cartridges have made it commonplace along with great accuracy, too. Just sayin'.

Joe I'm so hot on this cartridge, 20 Vartarg, I keep acquiring actions and barrels to build more rifles. I've got a Dakota Predator in 20 Vartarg and I am always impressed how accurate it is and how much damage it does to whatever I shoot with it. I tried 17s for a while and was unimpressed. Then I bought the Dakota in 20 Vartarg and I'm hooked.

as Joe mentioned above you should really check into the 20 SCC if you like the 20VT. It offers the ability to easily push a 32 grain bullet well over 4,000 fps with no pressure signs and great accuracy. There is plenty of info about it over on the www.smallcaliberclub.com forum if you want to research it.

I think you're right, Matt. Before Mike passed he told me to use the rifle to it's full potential in the rat patch. I've given it the love and attention I know Mike did, and I know he'd approve of it's position in my safe, and of all the adventures it has been on since in my care. I think about Mike fondly every time I'm in the field with "Scooter", his beloved 20VT. I sure do miss him.

Thanks for the kind words also; much appreciated. :)
