Cool powders..?

I keep reading about cool burning powders to extend barrel life. Right now I am useing IMR 4064 in .308 with 168 SMK.. I understand the .308 has good barrel life but is there a different powder I could try to extend barrel life and that shoots as well as the 4064 or is it a non issue..?

IMR-4064 is about "middle of the road" to Heat of Explosions.
And is better then some other powders often used in 308's.
Here's a small list:

• 4050-kJ/kg = Varget
• 3990-kJ/kg = RL15
• 3880-kJ/kg = IMR4064
• 3830-kJ/kg = H4895
• 3720-kJ/kg = N140

Myself wouldn't be to concerned at all for a 308 with any powder.
A 30-cal bore is a "big exhaust pipe" for that case capacity.

Rate of fire is an important thing for barrel life. When you shoot alot of shots fast, it is hard on barrels. The 1000 yard BR guys don't get the round count that some other forms of competitions get. The barrels can get really hot.. Matt

I chase my lands to maintain a constant seating depth. As a side benefit of this, I can easily calculate how much barrel throat I loose per round. In .308 I started with 8208xbr which had a barrel loss of .001 in/ 100 rounds. I moved to Varget with .001 in/200 rounds, and then AR-comp with .001/in per 500 rounds. This was not as scientific as I have written it. There was bullet weight changes from 175 grain to 155 grain, and velocity changes from 2600 to 3000 ft/s in, and charge weight changes: All in chasing the sweet spot. But in my gut AR-comp was the best. Hope this helps! Brant
