Converting 6ppc lv to 30 br hv any tips/suggestions?

Hi all,

I'm considering converting one of my 6ppc lv (10.5#) guns to a 30 br hv. Its a stolle panda action/McMillan br stock. I'm sure several people have attempted this conversion. What are your tips to get the balance right (ei barrel contour, barrel length, weight systems etc)

Its possible that its just not worth it and I need to find a "new to me" hv for the 30 br. If that is your opinion I'd appreciate hearing about that too.

Thanks,

Ryan

RRWILDLIFE,
I converted a Panda from 6PPC to 30 BR. You may have to have the bolt face opened up from PPC to 308 by Kelblys or other for approximately $90. I put on a Krieger HV, 24 inch barrel, chambered by Kelblys. The recoil of the 30
BR was excessive for the now 10.5 plus rifle (bolt handle hit my trigger finger hand) so I added lead weight to the butt end to bring the weight to 13.5 pounds. Although the recoil is still lively, it shoots very well.
Good luck on the conversion.

Bill,

Glad to know you were able to do a successul conversion. I will have to have the bolt face opened up. I was thinking that weight would probably have to be added. How much weight did you have to get in the butt end?

Thanks

Ryan

Wait til you get your new hv 30br barrel installed and add weight to get to 13.25 lb to save room for future scope, rings, different barrel, etc. i like to add weight all over the stock (approx 2lb) to make it more like a hv stock but adding it in the butt will be fine too. I mill slots and fill them with lead shot and epoxy mainly between the barrel and trigger area- in the middle

Ryan, you really don't have to have the bolt face opened up. I did a 30BR on a PPC face by turning down the rim on the cases.
Contact Butch Lambert and I'm sure he would give you the info. It worked fine on mine.

Search for rebated base br cases. Some even made a form tool for it. Or you can go grendel/major and not lose anything. Mike ezell has been successful at that case

Thanks for all the helpful advice. I dont think ai want to go the rebated rim route. Seems like it would be easier to just get kelbys to open up the bolt.

Has anyone had a gule in "broken free" and restocked? I guess thats a possibility too.
