Contender 222

Purchasing a contender 222 from a member with a 10” barrel any thoughts on powder or bullet for this length of barrel? Or just use normal 222 specs?

In the back of the Lyman reload manual they have a section for Contender / Encore load data im not sure if the 222 is listed or not. I can check a little later & let you know for sure

The 222 Rem barrel most likely has a 12" twist so 55 gr bullets are about as heavy as you can stabilize. For varmints like ground hogs the 50 gr Sierra Blitz or the Hornady VMax would be a great one to try.

MY 10'' 222 LOVES RL-7 AND 40GR NOSLER BT'S SHOT SOME DANDY 200YD GROUPS WITH IT

Thanks Stacy, going to have to hunt down that combo, what primers were you using? One gentlemen told me to use magnum primers, because they burn hotter it will burn up powder faster, better speed for shorter barrels?

205MATCH WORKS GREAT !

I had a 222 contender. Could not get it to shoot until I found out it had a 1-14 twist. It was a 10 inch barrel I wasn't getting the bullets going fast enough to stabilize Using a fast powder like 4198 or rl7 and using short bullets Would be my recommendation
When I got a 14 inch long 223 barrel, It worked even better I think it had a faster twist also.

Hodgdon has load data for TC 10" 222 Rem online, looks like the same as the old IMR pamphlets from around 2000. Hornady 7th Edition has more data as well.
