Confusing Ladder Test Results

.....I guess I'll run the other two ladders and see what happens....

I would not only run the planned shot strings, but I would first repeat the ladder in question with all the variables exactly as before. If the same results occur with this ladder, successive ladder results (assuming this pattern doesn't repeat) become more relevant.

Good luck.

Did I overlook a note about brass weights ?

I tested 85grs Sierra GK with the same load but different brass weights, all brass annealed, neck turned you name it, in my 243W hunting rifle.

200fps / 60mps MV difference between lightest (Remington) and heaviest (RWS) case.

A large weight spectrum within the RWS cases (170 to 183.9grs) led to a MV difference of 167fps just within that one brand.

I'm not a .308 shooter but I'm wondering if maybe Varget might be a little fast for 175 gn. bullets.

No. It's actually one of the preferred powders for that weight range. I shot 4064 and it's a little faster than varget.

Being I am in the learning stages , I would like to see the target shot in the test. I thought that was the most valuable info on a ladder test ?

good luck

I ran the other two stings as close to the same conditions as I could. Much different results from what I got with 168 SMKs. With the 168 SMKs, it was VERY clear where the accuracy nodes were and stringing was very evident. Not so much with the 175 SMKs.

All three strings. Posted to show frustrating lack of vertical stringing. I have shot placement recorded by not on the photos. Imagine one up, one down, one up, one down. That's basically how all three ladders progressed. Not consistency and contrary to what I expected. Lines are 1".

I understand, but when you rely on a cheap chrono, you are only spending primers, powder, bullets and barrel life. Don't do it. I recommend you just pick a load that groups the best and shoot it.
