Competition shooter

Do most here shoot in competition or are you just a casual range shooters

if you shoot in matches what is some of the main reasons you do?
I use to shoot in big matches but now just shoot smaller local matches
mainly just to enjoy friends and enjoy the day and do what we love todo
we shoot the bull about as much as we shoot bullets. No one leaves crying if they don’t win
whats you take

I shoot quite a bit and do a few comps a year, mostly for the camaraderie. I REALLY like precision reloading and accurate bench rest rifles. Time at the range is done mostly alone and I prefer it that way. With the rising costs of everything and being on a fixed income, this 66-year-old is getting very frugal with the components I have.....I DO love this hobbie.

Regards
Rick

I still enjoy competition at 76. I try to shoot a match every weekend May through October. I run a once a month spring airgun benchrest indoor 20 meter match which gives me 12 month competition. I limit my range time to load development with pb . I shoot every day 50 to 100 shots with the air rifle. No reloading, .04 cents a shot and very little cleaning. Requires similar skills to pb if you want to be competitive. Weighing and measureing pellets for matches included. I shoot a lot outdoors at 50 and 100 yds with my Diana 54 in .22 when the weather is warm. Besides, cocking a spring gun helps keep an old guy in shape.

I've shot a few matches with JEFFPPC, Fuj and others on here.

It's like they claim.
Camaraderie, shooting the bull, good food.
Oh, and there is some rifle shooting also. :D

I look at matches as helping me be better with my hunting rifles.

Most of my range time is alone.
And varies widely.
Load development in my hunting rifles with different bullets and powder combinations that there may not be load data for.
Different bullet weight in pistols. (revolver and semi auto)
What kind of group can i expect from my 357 Mag or 45 Colt revolvers at 25, 50, 100, 200 yards for hunting.

This year I'm going to be working more on longer range with my hunting rifles.

I shoot Four Region Level NBRSA VFS Matches, two NBRSA Registered Group Matches, four Tomball Club Matches, the NBRSA Short Range Varmint for Score Nationals, and the Tack Driver.

I might try to work in another Registered Group Match if business allows. We stay pretty busy.

I am also 77.

XTC Service Rifle Guy for 14 years (local, regional and National Match levels), Dabble in MR/LR Sling, and just now touching F T/R. Competiton drives improvement IMHO. As long as we can keep supporting ourselves given the price of fuel, rifles and components that is.

I am a competitive shooter because

1. Load development is boring and useless unless it serves a purpose.
2. Hunting season is short and you may not even see your target prey
3. Competitive shooting = formal training evaluation relative to your peers and yourself.
4. It is a reason to see your friends and put rounds down range with a purpose.
5. It develops skill, discipline, self confidence and self fulfillment with your firearm of choice. No different than excelling at any other sport.
6. There is a discipline for everyone - just about anyone can participate.

I could go on.

I plan on shooting USPSA/IDPA type of competition in the near future. There are several reasons including, camaraderie, fun, range shooting is so restrictive (and necessarily so), my daughters would be more interested in kinetic shooting than boring range time and I want to expand my skill set. The informal "action" shooting I've whipped up over the years is just damn exciting. And in final confession the main reason is that I like to make bang!
It hasn't happened yet, but I'm putting together two shooting rigs (1911 and SA-35), saving up ammo and trying to rid myself of this blasted flinch! It is so embarrassing.

Got hocked in the Army ! Small Bore
Service Rifle , Match Rifle ,Palma , F/TR and F/Open . Three time High Master Governors 10 Camp Perry Medals etc.
At 77 just slowing down
Finding .22 Rim Fire with the other Sensors and Lunch the flavor of the time .

I have been shooting in competitions for 61 years (82 years old). During that time I have been a competitor in god only knows how many different disciplines (with rifle & shotgun) and in 12 countries. I love competing, but most of all I remember all the wonderful people I have met over the years and the time I have spent shooting and socializing with them. Competing is enjoyable, winning is even better; but the people are the main reason I continue to do it. I am lucky that that my wife (of 60 years) competed for quite a while and she still loves to go with me to matches around the country and overseas. She is a people person and remembers everyone she has ever met! Everybody knows Bev! I have no memory and have to ask her all the time…who is that? I hope to compete for at least another 19 years! :-) Hope to see a bunch of you at the South West Nationals next week.

Bev is one of my earliest and best memories in F Class... She's a treasure for sure.

I compete in local XTC matches. I enjoy working to improve my personal best.
As mentioned, I feel competition is like a formal test; personal bests in a match are sweeter than in practice. I do enjoy when my score is the best at a match.
I am very fortunate that I'm still able to easily get into the sitting and prone positions - and get back up:)

I am able to practice at a local private range a bunch - but almost always by myself. I reload so I can practice/shoot matches.

I'm coming up on my 82nd.

I shoot local, regional, and National XTC matches. I run our 500 yard prone match, so it gives me more practice for the XTC matches.

Great people, Amazing locations (Buffalo Creek Gun Club in CO can’t be beat),most of which are family friendly for my 4 boys, and promoting a life skill.

Plus, I can’t think of many sports that can be done on a level playing field. There is no advantage or disadvantage in Highpower to height, weight, arm span, strength, etc. It’s pure skill only.

I would say that less than 3 percent of the shooters at the range where I volunteer, are competitive shooters. We are a public range with steel targets to 1000 yards.
