Competition rests

Been a while since I posted here but late is better than never..I currently build pistol and rifle rests and am in the process of building a rest for 1000 yd competition and am needing some input on what a fellow would like to see on such a rest..All input would be gratefully accepted...Thanks...

Windage top that doesnt wobble

about 25lbs or so would be a nice compromise

decent footprint,18" front to back) so returning the gun to battery doesnt disturb the rest.

smoothe effortless mariner wheel with at least a 1" center post.

easy way to contain the sandbag without glue.

built in level in the base plate or top

rack and pinion coarse adjust for the main post like bald eagle and a speed screw in the rear.

That's all i have for now...

What JB said. Also I'm an F-Class shooter so would appreciate more height adjustment range in the feet to help level the rest on the mound as well as some F-class feet like the sinclair ones as options to stop the feet sinking in too far.

Here`s what i have so far on the current ones I build..Weight is about 30lb,no slop in the top as I set the stem up with minimun clearence, usually around .0015,stem is 1-5 acme thread, hand wheel rides on a nylon washer which makes it very smooth, foot print is 14x16 but could be made bigger if needed,,no problem there..Same goes for the feet adjusters, could make them any length as needed with pads on the bottom..Front bags are attached via 4 screws on the top.Windage top is double spring loaded and adjusts with a 3/8-24 side screw..Rest could be made at any height desired...If the moderator of this site would contact me on one of these we could get together and auction one off to benefit the site..Happy shooting...

Ok guys,we`re gonna do it so I need to know how tall the rest should be from the bottom of base to the top of the hand wheel and how long the leg adjusting screws should be...

I would think 3" of height adjustment on the feet would be more than adequate as an F-Class option.

Michael

ps I forgot to mention that the ability for the rest to magically go from 30lbs to next to nothing and back again on unpacking would be ideal. Shipping to Australia really kills us! ;)

That would be a real treat eh...Did I mention that it has a built on carry handle???Tought I would let ya know....

Bully-eye, if the legs were fat and hollow, they coul then could be filled with sand or water. That could cut down on transport weight.

fuzz -- my cowan rest was around 3.5 off the deck and my hart with base plate was almos 4.5"

4.5 should work well with 3" of travel in the legs and at least that in the center post :thumb:

also...stainless is good :D

G`Day all just a thought,I have a Wilson rest and the base is cast iron and is bloody heavy but there is no reason why the base couldn't be made out of hollow section with plugs on each section and you just add lead shot to make it to what ever weight.
I am thinking of making a new base this way for mine as when i shoot Rim-fire BR it doesn't have to be heavy.
And for F-Class just have your alloy feet to go on the pins.
Haven`t got into the F-Class as yet but is there any reason you can`t have a hole in each of the foot plates to stick a pin through so it doesn't slide on grass or whatever.

Hi again, haven`t forgot you guys, just a little busy..I will be getting this rest built and sent to this forum and then the Head Cheese in charge can raffle it off or have an online auction on it..I`ll have it done sometime this fall.....Have a good one guys....

Fuzz -- no sense paying double shipping. Take pics, and send them to the moderator or myself and they will get posted, then you can send it to the winner.
