Combine powder or keep separate?

I have an 8# jug of TiteGroup with ~2-3# remaining and about 5-6yrs since opened. I have two unopened 1# bottles of same. Combine and free up some in short supply space or keep separate?

I often mix the last of one jug with the next. I do it to avoid having to switch lots at an inconvenient time, like while loading for a big match. I mix it well and test the new hybrid lot, and then as alf says I rock on.

In this case, I would probably keep them separate. Just because you say you have an 8lb jug that you opened 5-6 years ago and still have 2-3lbs left.

If you were going through it faster, then I'd say mix it up well.

Maybe sell off the 1lb bottles if you really don't use this powder much.

I feel that if the containers are the same mixing a bit of leftover powder in the next bottle is fine, especially for handguns loading on a Dillon 550.

When using a powder measure to charge your cases, as I do for rifles you can run the powder out as long as you keep weighing the powder charge.

I did inadvertently mix some Hercules Greendot with some newer Alliant Greendot.

I am a firm believer in buying 1 pound bottles of powder, I have Power Pistol I bought over 15 years ago.

If the two singles are the same lot number, I would just keep them separate and treat your powder as two different lots. You are not going through powder very fast so I do not see any advantage in combining.

Personally, I mix new and old bottles. I figure it minimizes any differences between the two, giving you a sort weaning off one onto the other kind of thing. Never noticed any difference (though my record keeping is not exactly accurate in any sense, either.)

The advantage I can think of right off is reclaiming the space of two 1# bottles in the powder magazine. Any others, if there are any, haven't come to mind yet.

I really don’t like switching lots of powder midway a barrel’s life. I have 3 rifles shooting Varget. I buy 2-8# jugs and if they are not the same lot, I always mix them. Have mixed 8-1# bottles with a 8 pounder. Relabel both jugs as Lot #1 and next 16# as #2 etc

I'm mainly a plinker, not a shooter. I'll be using it for the various revolver 3's. .32SWL, .32H&R, .327FM, .38/.357. And likely 99% (minimum) not magnum loads other than .32H&R mid-level loads. IOW only on 2 digit options of those uses. :)

I mix many times... especially on pistols and shotguns. Also would apply to "fun" guns. On the comp guns I most times buy bullets and powder enough to last a barrel life. Hunting guns I essentially buy enough components to last a lifetime at this point. I dont hunt much so thats a pretty low number.
