Colorado coyote rookie

I want to start coyote hunting in eastern CO.,east of Denver). No predator experience...just a deer and elk hunter. Any local advise on locations and callers I should consider?

I don't hunt Colorado - but I do hunt coyotes! :) Great way to get out in the hills off-season, and I figure every coyote zapped is another fawn with a better chance of growing to maturity. I generally use my deer rifle too, a .25-06, just more time afield with that particular rifle...

Camouflage is important. The coyotes seem to be able to see pretty well.

I like a mouth call, dying rabbit, but the electronic jobs are probably better. If they've been called and shot at a lot, they're wary. Consider taking along a feather or something, and a length of fishing line... You can hang the feather where it will catch the breeze and move about a bit while you're calling. The coyote may be distracted by the feather/movement and not pick up on you as readily.

Don't spend too long in any one stand. If nothing happens in 20 minutes, get out of there. Move a half mile or a mile and try again.

Howlers work sometimes. This can bring in big daddy, ready for a fight with an intruder in his territory.

The young pups will be out soon, if they're not already. In early and mid summer they are pretty ignorant and pretty easy to take. After they've lived through a season of people trying to shoot them, and other critters trying to eat them, they get pretty good at survival...

Best of luck to ya! Coyote hunting is fun.

Very good advice above. I use mouth calls also. I would start out with a rabbit distress call. I think that the set up of calling location is more important than how the call sounds. I do not believe any two rabbits sound the same. Try to stay down wind of where you think coyotes are and will be coming from. Pick a stand that lets you see quite a bit of area upwind of you. Try to get a tree, bush or rock or something behind you to break up your silhouette. Sit down and start calling, wait 3 to 5 minutes and call some more. If nothing shows up after 20 or 25 minutes, move to a new location. Just keep going and don’t give up. When you get it figured out it makes it all worth it.

not from CO but the best thing is dont over call.if a dog is interested he will come and find the critter.call for 5-10 sec then weight 5-10 min.

open reed call like primos or predater quest calls are great because they allow you to adjust your sounds unlike say a jones call with a metal enclosed reed.deep timber sounds makes a awesome fawn call for bears thats got lots of coyotes to come in for me.i use both electric and hand calls.

when you think you have sat long enough stay another few min.iv had several come in after i made myself stay put.

most guys say a coyote will always only come in from down wind,WRONG)!!most will but not all.look all around all the time. but keep your movements slow.

camo patern isnt the most impotant but you want to break up your body by using a tree or bush.

just my thoughts and how it works for me.
