color dyeing a laminated stock

I have a bunch of Transtint Homestead dye leftover from my woodworking days, will this work on my laminated rifle stock or will UV fade it out to much. thinking of going lemon yellow

I have to assume that any dye manufactured and sold would have a "fair" UV resistance. Couple that with the probability that your stock won't be left out in the sun for all that long and I'd say "Go for it". What info do you have from the manufacturer?

it says will fade over time so I don't really shoot in matches and mostly in the shade or in the shade only, so actually I think your right I'm going for it, thanks for the push I'm taking the leap

I assume you realize that the laminates used in typical commercial laminated stocks are died prior to laminating them. There is adhesive involved in the process and then the stocks are finished in one way or another. This processing will adversely effect how the stock accepts a dye applied after the fact. Even if you have an undyed blank, the laminating adhesives will probably cause you some problems with the even uptake of dye.

Test your dye in an inconspicuous place first, like on the forearm under the barrel.

Yeah.. my first thought was.. paint it!

Another pic without finish. Matt
looks great
It looks better after the finish is on. Everybody that saw it really liked it. I dyed it black first and then sanded it off. That darkened up the curl. Then dyed it blue. Then we clear coated it. It shines that hard, that it is hard to take a pic without reflection. On the unfinished pic, The black in the firearm bottom is where the rails went, i didnt sand the black off there. Matt

I'm going to sand the buttstock off and do a spot if I like it will post a pic, with the Homested dyes the colors are endless, it is a savage 12 stock, pepper I guess you call it, so it has a grey black color already so I think the lemon yellow will enhance the color. I done a spot but you won't know till the finish is on. I have some screw holes to fill also where I attached a cheekpc, wish me luck it's my 1st stock finish. I would like to do a rub on finish what do you guys recommend.

I looked and looked for a full, square block of Bumblebee or Yellowjacket. They look great (to me) when finished. I only found one source but I had to buy ten to get any.:( Let's see pics when you can.:)

That did turn out nice. I'm ready to dye one here also. Good wood dye ain't cheap I found out.
I bought a lot with 5 different Keda dues for 15.00. They can be mixed to obtain other colors. That 5 little packs of color makes a lot of stain. Matt

did not go well I think the stock has some oil in the wood, plan B Paint
well I went with Antique cherry red, medium walnut, orange die, orange went on 1st, then mixed the walnut & cherry, turned out fair I guess, will post pics when I get brave enough
