color anodized metal

Hello,
Does anybody know if metal parts that have been color anodized be brought back to their original condition. If so how difficult is it to do? I am interested in a heavy gun with some parts that look to be color anodized. I don't particularly care for that look, and would like to remove it if it is feasible. Thanks for any help.

Anodizing changes the crystalline structure of the surface of aluminum. The changed structure can be dyed rather permanently. In order to remove the color, you must remove the anodized layer. Understand, this changes the dimensions of the piece. If the piece requires close tolerances, then removing the anodized layer is not an option.

But, if close tolerances are not an issue, you may remove the anodized layer by any mechanical means available, abrasives, cutting, etc.) The result, with the anodized layer removed, will be a softer, more easily deformed surface - unless you anodize it again, in your case, without dyeing it.

Here is an interesting treatise on anodizing that may help your understanding:
