Coins, old. Selling them.

NETim

Curmudgeon-at-large
My father recently passed. We moved both Mom and Dad to assisted living about 2 weeks before he went. Anyway, I've been collecting their "junk" of 67 years of marriage. Some of that "junk" includes a bunch of coins, old stuff.

I'm no coin guy.

What would be the best way to sell this stuff at a fair price, if possible?

Thanks!!

Unless there is a real need to sell gold and silver, I would hang on to it for a while. I went through the same experience, several years ago, haven't turned loose of any of it. I agree with Josh, find a reputable dealer, trying to do it yourself will drive you nuts. Sorry for your loss.

Find a local coin club. Bring a FEW of the items with you. Ask opinions.

Do not take to the local coin shop - sorry, but most will attempt to give you 20 cents on the dollar.

Yes, they need to make a profit to, but 80% is a BIG margin.

PM a picture to me......I am NOT in the market to offer, but will help.

Wheat pennies, Mercury dimes, Buffalo nickels, or silver and gold?

When I was a kid, I started saving every Bicentennial quarter I came across. I have a few hundred of them. Now 46 years later they are worth $0.25 each....... my grandkids will fight over them.
My mother hasnt spent a drummer boy quarter since the day i was born and running a pharmacy came across a bunch of them over the years. She has saved every $2 bill and bicentennial quarter that came into her store for 46 years. Pretty amazing. They are also worth $.25 and $2 each. She also had a crazy lady that paid in 1/10oz gold coins every time she came in. Lots more handy than a full oz coin. image.jpgimage.jpg

Thank you all for the feedback. I am finding most of the coins are silver rounds and some gold. A few Morgan silver dollars in the mix but not too many. I have to dump out the bag and do an inventory. :)

I had bags of Morgan’s, along with Libertys. When I read about one “ultra rare, only so many made, it’s worth a million bucks” Silver dollar, I spent days looking at every one! Never found it!

There was a rumor some were made where the drummer boy had no drumsticks and were worth millions.......

My dad found a 1909 S VDB wheat head penny from a parking meter in Morris, MN in about 1963-64. Extra fine condition. Worth $350.00 at the time, coin dealer offered him $15.00. My dad pointed out it was a VDB, he said he missed that( ya right). Still have it in the family.
Someone used it for 12 minutes of parking.
