cocking piece engagement

Does anybody know the amount of trigger bar/cocking piece engagement in a Remington style action? I seem to be coming up with an entirely too small amount.

I coated the surface of the CP with magic marker and dry fired a few times. Shows about 60-70% contact, which I think is proper. Did this to check the sear height of a BnA trigger.

I had one overriding last week and managed to find another cocking piece that was .005 higher and installed that one and cured the problem. That meant that there was only between .005 and .010 engagement between the trigger and cocking piece and that doesn't sound like enough to me. I just was curious to what someone else had found.

It's going to vary , depending on how large your raceway is compared to your bolt body dia.

What trigger?

Gmac is correct above. Sounds like its wore out or somebody has “fixed” it for you.
Xtreme trigger in a Defiance CC action. If you'll remember Glenn started this company by making these actions and sending everybody to PTG to get a bolt. Well, standard Remington bolts wouldn't work because of the extraction cam being rotated a bit to far counterclockwise. So one would have to break loose the handle and resolder it in a different place and then things worked fine. Except now I had the problem with the cocking piece overriding the extreme trigger when I closed the bolt. Changing the cocking piece fixed the problem but the engagement has me wondering what is "right".

Are you sure the trigger is adjusted properly and resetting? I only ask because I had same problem with my Bighorn Tactical and had to increase the sear engagement on the B'nA a little to make it right...and it was more than they specified in their instructions
I doubt wear is the issue.

Yes, trigger is performing properly. I have to fire the trigger in order to recock the bolt because the cocking piece jammed on top of the trigger bar. The firing pin only falls about half way before jamming. This will be the last barrel I'm going to put on this action. After this one wears out I'm throwing the action in the river.

Xtreme Mod. 22
How much movement in the bolt shroud/ cocking piece from a cocked position to fired ? It's best to have thumb pressure pushing down while pulling cocked trigger and letting the firing pin fall . I doubt a wear issue but could still be size related .

Engagement can also vary from play between bolt sear and shroud, also between shroud and bolt threads, also between bolt body and receiver.
I consider an engagement of .016-.020 as precise, safe and consistent...

Well, I believe I have solved my issue. I set the trigger up on rods through the mounting holes and measured the distance to the top of the sear bar with a dial indicator and double checked it against a couple of Remington triggers here in the shop and it appears that the Xtreme is about .023 lower than the Remingtons. Although I have it working I'm going to swap it out for another (different) trigger I have here. Think it'll be OK now but I can't understand why so much difference?

Robert,
Thanks for the numbers! Appreciate it. Figured you'd know what it was.

A pretty rough way to measure but the best I can come up with what I have. Just an indicator reading from the parallel to the top of the trigger bar.
