COAL for 107gr SMK's for my 6mm BR

Just wanting to know what would be a good starting point for my new Savage Model 12F Class rifle in 6mm Norma BR. Ive have choosen to go with the Sierra 107gr match kings but i am unsure of what lengh to seat them at? Also what tenson should i have my 3 bedding screws at?

I have the exact same rifle and have found that my rifle shoots well with 30.5 gr. RL-15, CCI 450 primers, and the 107 SMKs seated 0.01 off the lands. I am getting about 0.2 MOA with this load and it worked quite well in the F-Class,1,000-yard) match I shot yesterday. I do not measure in terms of OAL, I prefer to use the Stoney-Point,Hornady) gauge and set the seating depth that way.

I also got good groups with 30.0 grains of RL-15, but in the winter I am going to stick with 30.5 gr where I am getting ~2,940 fps at around 60 degrees. I also found that Varget shot quite accurately but the velocity was 120+ fps slower than the same amount of RL-15. Maybe I have a slow lot of Varget.

With 30.5 RL-15 + 107 SMK + CCI 450 my SD was 5.6 and extreme spread was around 14 fps for a 5-shot string.

What is your OAL tho what you have got? I just want a starting point. I havent brought myself a OAL guage as of yet. I have gone with ADI 2206H to start of with.

I also have the same Savage F class rifle and this is what I have found. OAL from cartridge base to bullet ogive as follows:

Berger 105VLD OAL 1.687 Base to bullet tip 2.4395
Hor A-Max 105 OAL 1.695 Base to bullet tip 2.344
Sierra MK 107 Oal 1.687 Base to bullet tip 2.403,same as Berger to ogive but base to tip lenght is longer with the Berger)

Hope this helps.

Mine are about 2.385 COAL or exactly 1.823 Ogive to base with a .231 sleeve. The SMK's are notorious for having big variances in bullet overall length so giving out COAL's is a pretty weak measurement for consistent rounds. This measurement gives me a .015 jump, a good place to start for SMK's.)

BTW - inquire about torque amounts over at savageshooters.com if you don't get an answer over here.

OAL=over all length
COAL=cartridge over all length
Like TiGuy said, oal & coal which is the same, you do not get consistent measurements. You can use a comparator which measures from the ojive of bullet & get an exact measurement. Sinclair sells nice comparators which are deeper than the ones Hornady sells. Hornady are smaller in diameter & tend to wobble a little.
