Cleaning without a rod

Assume you do not have a cleaning rod, as in a 14 caliber.

How would you clean the rifle barrel ?

No experience with this, but...

Remove barrel from rifle, as in a quick swap Savage barrel.

Spray with Wipe Out.

Let sit for full effect.

Pour boiling water down barrel to remove Wipe Out and loose fouling.

Dry barrel with compressed air.

Replace barrel on action.

Bad idea ?

Well, at the risk of putting myself on report. What I have done in the past is take a length of weed eater "string", melt the end and shape to just under the bore diameter, and use that to pull a patch with solvent and a patch.

It does work, if not the most eloquent solution. :)

Fine tough twine, piece of brass to slide from breach to the muzzle...Tie a bit of patch to the string & pull it thru..couple of dry, then wet with solvent..repeat as needed..lightly oil then one dry patch before firing...A million years ago winchester had a neat 243 lever gun...my chuck hunting mentors dad was a machinist...He made him a brass gizmo with a hole drilled across the relieved butt section [looked like a boat tail bullet, but thinner] to tie a string to...worked like a charm for cleaning lever guns from the breach end...mike in ct

Art,
I still have about 10 of the 14 caliber cleaning rod sets that I had Dewey manufacture for us here awhile back. I hope to have them make a few improvements to them in the future so we had been holding off on selling them in large quantities before we can get everything ironed out on making the best rods we can.

I'd sure hate to see you take a chance on ruining that Pac-Nor barrel without a good cleaning system. The 14 is very particular about using good cleaning practices and bullet prep.
You can ruin a good 14 caliber barrel in a hurry if you’re not careful.

Shoot me an email at info@extremeaccuacy.net if you’re still in the market for a cleaning rod.

Wish you the best of luck with your new 14,

Carl Chapman
