Cleaning with H4895

it is a thing, Milo. Also, I do not go the long shooting strings that you do. I found varget to have a pretty good carbon ring.

You may try the user friendly Montana Extreme Copper cream that is very easy to use compared to JB, and more agressive Iosso and flitz.

I use the Copper cream on patches or on a really foulded up barrel with a bronze bristle brush...you will love how easy this product is to use. Short stroke on 3 patches will usually clean out the copper and carbon if the regular brush has not cleaned as NICE as you would like to.
Thanks Ack, I JB'd the barrel Friday, cleaned up nice, I have tooling marks running lengthways like the rate of feed was increased as it was cut, or dull. With a borescope, you can visualize it is an attractant, I'd complain if it did not shoot, but it does. I can clean the barrel, it is a gun I built for my Godson, not a heavy use rifle, we sneak out when we can, between his activities.

Is it a Proof Research barrel or another brand?

I have never experienced any cleaning problems or build up problems, ever. No matter the barrel, powder, or cartridge. I have always brushed and used jb if needed. I have never had this carbon ring thing or any other cleaning related issue. I feel there are 2 main reasons people have issues. One is they think a bronze brush can hurt a barrel and two, is they dont clean often enough. Just clean the gun every time you shoot it. Dont let it go 100s of rounds. Clean it well every time, no quick half way cleanings. And use the brush. If a bronze brush hurts a barrel just imagine what a bullet does ....

The fouling is carbon and it sticks to the point of needing an abrasive to remove it, I always use bronze brushes and I've tried all the so called "carbon removers". I probably look down 20 barrels a week and more have carbon fouling than don't. With respect unless you're inspecting with a bore scope you'll never know, many of my customers tell me their barrels are clean till I let them have a look with the Hawkeye.

Not certain I'll know it when I see it. I believe my best clean was done with Holland's Bitches Brew, (might be Witches Brew). I used to clean until I got rid of the Drag portion in the throat

The drag portion you mention, is that a rub mark from bullet for first couple of inches from the lands forward? I seem to get this on all my barrels, thought it looked like carbon and copper build up through the Lyman bore scope but my smith looked at it with Hawkeye and said it was a rub/drag Mark... I always clean with a bronze brush.

I didn't exactlly see it as a mark so much as a feel. I have been thus far unable to see much with a borescope. guess I'll have to take lessons for that too. Early on I was told to feel the carbon with the brush and keep after it 'til it was gone.
AND that the carbon and copper was laid down in layers and had to be dealt with as such. Shooters choice was our choice 'til Butch's came along. Then the doors swung open wide and everyone, it seems, has and sells their personal magic formula. On advice of counsel we returned to Shooter and it works just as well now as it did when we started winning club championships.
So clean is clean, but then you have to foul it to see if it will shoot in a hole. If you clean it to just short of clean clean will it then shoot in a hole from the git? See "Curious", Jul 9 2018.

Ok..I get the feel on the patch after a while (170-220rnds) and JB/Iosso to remove..
Bore scope takes time to learn and know what your looking at..I’m still learning after 18months!!

My question is... what do you do when those don't work?
I've never had a case where chems did not work as long as you went after it patiently. If you count on an abrasive exclusively to removedeposits of either copper or carbon my fear is that it will also attack the throat and or crown. After that I would try to alter the surface to keep it from gathering an inordinate amount of copper/carbon. DTAC Throat Maintenance or a poured lead lap come to mind. Thousands of barrels go through life shooting well with just a normal cleaning regime and I insist that my barrels do too

Can someone sticky this post so the "I don't want to hurt my barrel cleaning it" threads will stop?

Eventually someone is going to put nitroglycerine in the bore to clean it, but at least it AIN'T JB PASTE!!! Dats bad fer a barrel!!! My gunsmith said he seen a barrel get ruined just bein in the same room with a tub of JB paste!!! It's the DEBIL!!!

It has just gotten silly.

I read where some are saying their barrels do not copper file. I have had a borescope for about a year and found that all of my barrels copper file. I have no been able to remove all of the copper without using a brass brush. I have tried with Butch’s, Bore Tech and Iosso. Even after letting them soak, they still viable leave slight traces of copper unless I use a brush. It’s the same with Varget, 4895, 3031 and 4198.

What I have found is that the guns shoot fine and more consistent with the small traces of copper than if spotless. Knowing this, I try to figure out how many shots I get before accuracy starts to fall off and then clean, rather than worrying about my barrel being squeaky clean after each outing. Between thorough cleanings, I run 5-7 patches with Eezox through until they show no signs of carbon. I think this stuff works to reduce carbon from sticking. I have been using it for more than ten years.
