cleaning triggers

hey seems to be some mixed opinions on this just like cleaning barrels!!!! I have zippo lighter fluid avail to me. I have seen some guys on youtube say to pour zippo lighter fluid through the trigger and let it air dry, some say to use coleman camp fuel (white gas) and then use an air compressor to blow it out. Some say not to use any oil/lube some say to use oil/lube???

I have a timney trigger I think I will just pour the zippo lighter fluid through it and let it air dry, anyone see any issues doing this?

thanks

On topic but from the, more than you asked for column, haha.

Be aware, lighter fluid is Naptha...all good unless, lighter fluid "can" be blended with chems(since it's gonna be burned) that shouldn't be in/on a trigger.Key word is CAN....don't mean IS.

Next up is compressed air. This can range from air run through $$$$ filters, suitable for painting 200$+ a G paint or running anything requiring super clean/dry air

compared to your dumbarsed BIL's home depot 2G compressor that's never been drained.

Bttm line, there's "clean" chemicals and air,and then there's.....not.

The best thing I have found is charcoal lighter, air dry. NEVER had it catch fire. Clean and lube all in one .. Tommy Mc..

Lighter fluid/charcoal lighter/ Naptha are all the same (or very very similar). My trigger manufacturers (Bix'n Andy and Flava Flave ;)) recommend flushing with lighter fluid and air dry, no lube. I use VMP Naptha purchased by the quart or gallon at any paint center/big box store and keep a half pint Nalgene squirt bottle in my cleaning box. I do lightly blow out with compressed air. Works for me. I had a malfunction of the FF during a match and it was quickly solved with the above cleaning method. I had over 900rds without cleaning it:oops:. I now am committed to cleaning them out every 250 or so.

I seem to remember a recent bulletin put out by Bix and Andy that they do NOT want anything ( including lighter fluid ) introduced to their trigger mechanisms.

It's what I do on my Canjar LP and Rifle Basix. Seems to work fine.

For a really gummed up Jewell, I soak in acetone and then rinse with lighter fluid and air dry. This has worked for triggers that had dried solvent residue in them.

Thanks for that link.

some triggers require a little grease on the bearing surface like a guiseley.

some are required to be dry like a jewell

i clean them with brake cleaner. great degreaser/decarboner, pressurized and evaporates almost immediately.

brake cleaner is also great for cleaning up an AR. Inside upper and lower receiver and inside the buffer tube. just remember you have removed all the lube.

thanks guys looks like a few agree the zippo lighter fluid should be ok, I like to keep it simple and this seems like the simplest method.

I use the lighter fluid on the rem 700 walker triggers,

Bix n Andy tactical trigger instructions notes not to use any lube and said not to flush with lighter fluid, if clean use solvent and to keep unlubricated.

I learned the hard way not to lube a trigger, it can gum up in sub zero weather.

Best left alone. If you get debris in the mechanism use a gum out type of solvent i.e. something that will evaporate and not leave a residue.
