Cleaning the locking lug area

Ok, Got a question.

I have a Savage 12 and noticed a lot of junk in the barrel locking lug area.

I have tried every brush I own and can't seem to get the crud out.

I did try a AR 15 brush that has a large brush that is meant to go into that area on a AR but it didn't seem to be big enough to clean it out.

Outside of removing the barrel and cleaning it is there a special brush??

6.5 and 6mm Creedmoor.

Had the same issue on a Savage 12 LRP.

Basically, I opted to acquire a decent bore guide, along with a proper "lug area" cleaning tool. Adding the cleaning of the lug area part of the normal cleaning, each and ever time following a session has all but eliminated the problem. That is, once the gunk was removed. Further build-up hasn't occurred again.

what you are looking for are dental cotton's. Those are the tootsie roll type of cotton rolls that are used to clean the locking lug areas of the action. You can make a split wood dowel to hold them.

I use an AR style brush with carb cleaner from Napa. Tommy Mc

I use the Dewey lug area chamber cleaning tool with their special cotton cylinders. It does a very good job cleaning this hard-to-reach area.

I don't clean that area every bore cleaning, just every five or so bore cleanings.

Go to horrible freight with the last dollar in your pocket and get a set of these picks. Actually, get a couple sets. They're great.

Then take the 90 degree pick... file the sharp point off.

Then get a box of cotton swabs. The kind with the hollow plastic body, NOT the paper sticks. Cut off all of the cotton parts of the swabs, stick them on the end of your pick. Tada, best cleaning tool you can get... and the total cost is 2 dollars.

Save the little plastic straws... great for cleaning glue up from joints.

This is what I use. It helps to file the set screw down a bit. The one it ships with is too long.
Also, make sure to clean the lug area on the action out really well any time you remove/change barrels. Use an air compressor to blow out any crud and god forbid any kernels of powder.
