Cleaning Surface Rust

Several weeks ago someone posted a thread about a product similar to steel wool that they used for cleaning surface rust from a barrel. The product look like a ball of steel wool only thicker strands. I thought that I'd book marked the thread but can't find it. Any help from anyone who knows about the product would be appreciated.

It is probably going to be stainless steel pads. You can buy them at hardware or grocery stores I think. You should use them with some oil. Flitz itself works fine with 0000 steel wool.

I bought this from Buffalo Arms, haven't used it yet. I did previously have one from Brownell's that looked just like it and it worked well.

They are just stainless steel pads that you can buy cheap at the grocery store a lot cheaper that any where else.RW

The way that thing looks, it appears that what has happened is, they bought these kitchen sink cleaners at a wholesaler like Sams or something in that line, then used them to clean with. Then after some use and becoming dishseveled, then putting them in a clear plastic bag and sealing it, to sell to again to someone else for rust cleaning.. that is what it looks like to me!

A guy gave me a 'pot scrubber' once; it wasn't the same thing and didn't work the same. Maybe it wasn't the right kind of pot scrubber...

No offense taken...this is an internet forum...I surely don't take things as seriously as some of the other cranky, old goats on AS seem to. I just think that there may be a significant difference between this item and a pot scrubber and didn't want the OP to miss that potential difference, if it in fact exists and might be helpful to him.

That steel wool in the pics I have seen used on shotguns inside the barrel, but never a rifle! I'd rather see you use a 000 steel wool along with a healthy dose of CLP, Kroil or something similar (oil). Even better, start with a cloth and move up the roughness scale. I have never had to use anything more than 000 steel wool and it doesn't significantly impact the surrounding blue. The blue will come off with the rust, so use some oxpho blue from brownells to touch it up.

I've used STP cut with oil with good luck. Rust just wipes off if given time.

I don't know what it would do to bluing, but Nev-R-Dull works great on chrome motorcycle parts!

In the Pacific the trick for light rust on your M1 was a simple eraser. I had luck using a soft eraser and a touch of light oil on a blued barrel.

I've used the Frontier 45 pads, and they are the real deal. AND if ya have a crusty old bore, take some strands of the pad and wind them around a bronze brush and go to town.

I've tried them on blued surfaces, and they cause no harm. AND, call me cautious, but I wouldn't try the ones from the grocery store. jd

I have had decent results with copper scrubbing pads and oil. ( https://www.amazon.com/Chore-Boy-Copper-Scouring-Pad-2ct/dp/B006K3XS5A )

The mentor that passed this along said the copper was soft and would not scratch.

Also have used Flitz polish and a soft cloth.
