Cleaning a jewell trigger

OK so everything i see says to clean a Jewell trigger with lighter fluid. Sounds easy. And then i thought about it. Is all lighter fluid the same? Not being a smoker the only lighter fluid i have is for the grill. Is this the same as the stuff that goes in say a zippo? And what one do they intend to be used? Next do you guys remove trigger from the rifle? Also do you blast it off with compressed air or let air dry? Hate to over complicate this just want to get it right the first time. Thanks

Bert: I'm far from being an expert with triggers, but with the help of some on this site & the instructions that are included with Jewell triggers, I've completely dis-assembled, cleaned, re-assembled ( no left-over parts), and adjusted, both the benchrest model, and the Hunter with the bolt release & safety.

There have been times that I've found burrs and rough surfaces on interior parts and that was a good time to take care of that.

No big deal. I did try flushing them with lighter fluid then blowing out with compressed air. Sometimes it worked, but most times it did not.

Just one of the reasons I prefer to build using a Remington receiver, and of course, my Bat & Panda's also have Jewell triggers. The fact that Jewell's are not available for them is why I do not build on brand "S".

They are made to be taken apart and I urge you to give it a try. I always pictured springs flying out, but that will not happen.

Your post was kinda confusing, but Arnold said just use lighter fluid, white gas, to flush and clean his triggers.

butch: Yes, and I tried flushing with lighter fluid (Zippo), but it would not always cure the creep problem.

Have one Jewell that was on a used rifle that I bought, had creep, soaked it with lighter fluid, dried out, creep remained, did it again, no change. Took it apart & found a buildup of coagulated, dried out oil. Had to be from the previous owner(s). I don't use any lube on my triggers- ever.

Cleaned it with brake cleaner, re-assembled & it's now a perfect 4 oz. benchrest model.

What's confusing about my post? All I'm saying is they can easily be dis-assembled for whatever reason.

Your comment is confusing to me. Are you saying they should never be dis-assembled?

And, from the Jewell provided information brochure, page 1 section 111 Features: A. Modular design allows total disassembly for maintenance and cleaning. Jewells words, not mine.

Frank S- This part.

LHSMITH: You are correct, that added comment had no place in the posting. It was a poor choice, but I was only trying to show my great bias for Jewell triggers.

No offense meant or intended for those who have & use brand "S". Had two, one was sold, but still have and use the other. Very good rifle (now with a Hart barrel), but I still criticize it because of its trigger limitations. With a Jewell, it would be a great rifle.

With the vast number of brand "S" rifles, I'm surprised that a Jewell continues to not be offered.

Thanks for pointing that out. ;)

Actually FD, I misread that paragraph....I took the "S" to mean Shilen...as in trigger. . My fault...as one does not build on a trigger.
My apologies, since your posts always pretty much easy to read without this latest text lingo garbage which seems to quickly becoming the norm.

FD, I misunderstood your post also. I do have photos of a disassembled Jewel photo of a Jewel that I keep around if I forget how to take it apart.

Butch: Yes, I realize now it was a poorly put together & worded post. The fingers were working faster than the brain / seems to be happening a lot lately. ;D

I greatly appreciate all the help you provided, including the parts, when I was in need. A big Thank You.

Back to the original thread. If you need to take it apart this might help.

I have disasembled about every trigger out there, Jewell triggers included. Let me say there are some folks out there who should not take a Jewell trigger apart. I am sure Brian Jewell gets back a package(s) of dissasembled Jewell triggers more often than he cares for.
Taking it appart is easy, getting it back together and working correctly is another thing.

IF you need instructions or You Tube Video's to perform simple tasks/miracles,you should be seeking professional assistance.

Coleman Fuel & Acetone w/ Gravity assist have cleaned hundreds of Jewell trigger groups for me over the years.

Happy Holidays

The Hunter models are a little more involved with the safety & bottom bolt release, but other than taking a few more minutes, no big deal.
