Cleanest burning powder for 308 W

I would like to hear your opinion as to the cleanest burning powder for 308 W.My requirement is due to long string of fire at 300 metres.High velocity not a requirement.
thanks
Filippo

what bullet, what velocity ? what bbl length ?
what accuracy requirement ?
what discipline ?
the simple way to deal with long strings is to use coated bullets and work up a load.

Sierra 2156,velocity non relevant,700 mm,the smallest the better,300 free rifle prone.
I use HBN coated bullet.

For my Palma stuff I've found IMR 8208XBR to be the cleanest propellant I've ever used. Vihta Vouri's N150 would be next. Both are exceptionally accurate in my rifles too, which of course is the whole point.

Side note - I used to use moly then switched to hBN but shoot bare bullets mostly now.

I've got one shooting the 155 Bergers with Varget, has to be the easiest cleaning rifle I've ever had, better than the 133 in PPCs I've owned.

Yeah, kinda hard to believe, Varget, was a little funky in a 6br I had but is nothing to clean up in this 308.

with that short of a distance you might try 135's instead of the 155's
viht powders..135/140/150...and imr8208 have all worked well

I have found that no matter what cartridge I use it in N540 is the cleanest with H1000 next in line. They are just about at the opposite ends of the burn rate spectrum>> and you would NOT want to use H1000 in a .308 BUT it is VERY, VERY clean burning!

well there you go, n540 155's 27.5 inch bbl 103% load is about 2900 fps...
that ought to be comfortable to shoot in long strings....

lol

And, if you would seek the assistance from a medical practitioner STOOL, you too, would be much more comfortable, after being relieved from the abundance of crap you're full of ;D

I agree with the above. I have used Varget , IMR 4064, Winchester 748 and 760, and IMR8208XBR is in my opinion the best I've found. If anyone knows of something better please let me know.

It has very short grains so it measures like ball powder. It is also very accurate and temperature tolerant. In my 24 inch Savage with the Sierra 175 grain matchkings I get 2700fps with SD of 3 to 8 and 1/2 MOA. Here in Houston I use it in winter and summer without any variation in performance. The only problem with this powder is finding it.

Buona fortuna Filippo.

Thanks for all the answers. When I started at an old age to shoot free rifle I used Norma 202 ,then
the price went through the roof and I switched to VV N 150 that has always been my preferred
powder until going to 540 after coating with HBN usually with Lapua 155 scenar that had a reasonable price.
After VV was bought by the french it was a monopoly and their price too went up as well as Lapua components.I now use a single base extruded powder that is reasonable price wise made in the czech republic. As there are only 4 matches a year I could use expensive powders for matches .However stool objection concerning N 540 is real you can fry many eggs on my barrel after a match (unfortunately even so with single base powders).
While I try to shoot as few sighters as possible on average we shoots 70-80 shots in an hour and a half with markers and an hour and a quarter with electronic targets.
Both IMR 8208 XBR and Varget are not available and that leaves me with VV as only options.
Norma powders costs 140-150 $ per KG=2.2 pounds
IMR & Hodgdon cost 90 $ per pound
VV are about $ 110 per kg

WOW! I'll remember that others have to pay a lot more the next time I think I'm getting screwed on powder prices. If I had to pay prices like this for powder I'd even consider buying some from Bruno ::)

The OP's comments re: propellant costs are worth noting for sure despite how hard it's been to find popular propellants in the U.S. - at any price - over the past 18 months.

Consider then the prices Europeans pay for vehicle fuels http://m.ibtimes.com/gas-prices-pump-europeans-pay-almost-twice-much-us-residents-1322727 against what we pay (percentage of that paid for taxes too, and what those funds end up going to pay for) & we here may take little comfort in looking back on days gone by....

I like VV 150 for my long range Palma load (800-1000yards). VV140 for short range (300-600 yards) a little more comfortable to shoot, 2890 fps vs. 3000 for the 150.
