Claybirds as targets

Being new to the forum I'm not sure if this is an appropriate subject or posted in the correct place. My question is- Can anyone suggest a good way to hold claybirds to use as targets. I've tried hanging them on nails and mounting then on a steel channel. There are problems with both. Using the steel channel, if you hit the channel most of the birds will either fall off or break. It's hard to keep them on a nail since the lip on the birds is so narrow. In addition they don't hang staight. Any suggestions?

Someone makes a molded plastic "stake" that has a half circle molded to set the clay into. Only issue that I've ever had is that quite a few don't break with a center hit from a 22 cal, had to start shooting the edges. I have also taken a 2x4 & routed channels in it to set birds in. Usually a 2x4 hit won't shake them loose.

At Manatee Gun Range they used a black adhesive from a tube applied with a caulkgun, 8"x 8" cardboard, 4" clay bird. You apply the caulk to about 1/3 of the bird. You need a frame with wood on the top and staple the cardboard to it. This is the way we used to shoot the 500 Meter Claybird Match. Now they use AR500 spinning disc's.

bell and carlson makes the clay stands. in one pack you get four stands

ive seen an stand made from 2x2 board with and 2x4 legs... two nails per clay target...nails are put at 7o'clock and 5 o'clock. sit the clay on the nails and they along with the 2x2 board will hold them up...

It isn't hard to drill holes in clay birds. Just set up a drill press and cycle through a box day before going to the range. I hand them on string at 200 yards for rimfire practice.

Has anyone tried using something like duct tape to suspend the bird from a rail?

Otherwise tossing them on a bank works for me too!

Champion makes clay target holders.

They sell for under ten dollars for three, its just a basic plastic "y" that holds the target up in the air.

They'll resist quite a few impacts before they fail.

Rubber bands, at the LSS0 they would take a target board, put a drywall screw on each side, stretch a rubberband across it. They then spread it to hold the clay. They use 3 different size clays and it holds all sizes. Bust a rubber band it's cheap to fix

Eljay,

I run a egg shoot match. We shoot clays for the main match. We have rails for shooting Silhouettes. I hot glue them to a 1/4" plywood 2"x2" and stands them up, worked great this Year . We have made racks with half moons, also glued them to strings and hang on 2 nail to hold them still.

How about some 4" wood screws...use 2 for each bird only setting the screw in an inch and leaning the birds against the backer?

Go to suresiteinc.com they make a clay target hanger. I have a 5/16 wire rope strung from tree to tree and these hangers work great.

http://suresiteinc.com/index.php These guys sell clay bird holders that we set either on steel 3/8" rods or nylon cord. They work great and are very reasonable in cost.
