Clay pigeons at 481 yards with my 5.56

Looks like fun. Video quality is nice too. A friend has one those rifles - quite impressive for the price.

Cheers, it's definitely good value for money. By the way, I've been interested in F-class for a while and I just noticed your name. Greetings from Canada; it looks like you're in New Zealand. I read about some F-class records set with the 7mm SAUM, but then I saw this page from my local F-class association, saying magnums are banned in all three classes. Can you shed some light on F-class rules? http://www.bcrifle.org/misc/FClass_description.pdf

I have never heard of the magnum rule - so must be a local one. The 7mm Saum is getting popular as it is easier to tune than the 284. One club member suggested that it was a grown up 6BR. I dont shoot the big 7's. My "open" gun is a 6BR. I mainly shoot FTR with a 308, but also have a 223 and just playing about with a newly built 6SLR for the FPR class (may be a local thing too). Some ranges have locsl rules on velocity etc. These tend to be government run - you know, where the "authorities" believe that we know sweet FA about firearm safety etc... The FPR rifle is a new class and must have a magazine and uses a folding bipod and may have a rear monopod. The idea is use PRS style rifles in F-class matches. catching on a little and regional and national champs here.

From the ICFRA rule book.
An ‘F’ Class Open (F/O) rifle may be of any calibre up to and including 8mm and the overall weight must not exceed 10kg including all attachments (such as, but not limited to, its sights and bipod, if any). NB: An ‘attachment’ is defined as including any external object (other than the competitor, his sling (if any) and his apparel) which recoils (or partially recoils) with the rifle, or which is clamped, magnetically or viscously held, or in any other way joined to the rifle for each shot, or which even slightly rises with the rifle when vertically lifting the latter from its rest(s). This includes rain protection material as described at F3.2.2.
An F/TR Class rifle is limited to .223 Remington or .308 Winchester calibre chambers or their commercial metrification equivalents. Chamber dimensions must conform to SAAMI or CIP dimensions. Bore, Groove and Throat dimensions may be selected to suit bullets used. Ammunition may be commercially made or hand-loaded as defined in Rule F2.20. There is no restriction on bullet weight. The overall weight must not exceed 8.25kg including all attachments (as defined above) such as, but not limited to, its sights, rain protection material and bipod, if any.

After the above post, I read the link that you shared. Undoubtedly local rules, probably due to the 600 yd ranges available. On the short ranges, (500/600, we don't normally shoot 300 at my clubs) I often use the 223 as it can be quite competitive. BTW - I have never seen an "open" gun fired from a bipod - I just seems wrong! Do have a look at Keith Glascock's videos (Winning in the Wind) on YouTube though, to see how the open shooters perform.

Cheers, I think your analysis is spot-on. I read it again and found the reference to their 600 meter range, so it makes sense that they would exclude magnums. I have a really nice .308 I've been trying to sell without success, so I might make a few changes to it and try my hand at a local F-class event. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Great - you can never have too much scope in F-Class. Go for at least 30x. You dont need a Nightforce! You can go budget, if you need to - just make sure that the adjustments are repeatable/reliable. These days, most mid-range scopes are good. Sure, Nightforce, March, Trijicon 10 Mile and Kahles will be in the winners enclosure - but Sightron and others won't be far behind.

Good to know - I agree that more magnification always helps, especially as we age. I've been running Vortex Vipers (mostly PSTs) on all my precision rifles for years - mostly the 6-24x - but I've been selling them off after tiring of endlessly using that great warranty, paying for costly, insured shipping every time, with no end in sight. I'm now getting into Athlon scopes, which have been great so far. I ordered a Cadex .300 PRC, which I'll be fitting with their premier Japanese-made Cronus BTR Gen 2 4.5-29x56. For "lesser" rifles in my safe - like my prospective F-class .308 - I'll be replacing all those Vipers with Ares BTR Gen 2 4.5-27x50s. It's not as powerful as you suggest, but it has HD glass and a reputation for reliable tracking, so at about $1,000, I'm not aware of anything offering better value for money.
