Good shooting - anyone who says they never miss - well I just let that pass for now.
I was out Saturday - the wind was horrific in eastern PA. I set up parallel to the tree line which helped. Got one a 254 yards (long shot for me) and one a 191. I was using my 223 Model 700 with a heavy Douglas 26" long barrel - 1/4 moa rifle. Feeling good about my marksmanship - but it will be short lived.
Was out yesterday. It was perfect, no wind, warm, about 78 degree - same field - same rifle. As soon as I enter the field I see one standing in high hay - profile obscured - head and chest only exposed - since he isn't bobbing I'm fairly certain he's sitting on his hole surveying for threats. I set up, range is 139 yards. Should never miss at this range with this rifle - I shot and swore I got him - later when I checked (found his hole) I missed!!! Talk about shaking my confidence!
Later I see one at the edge of the treeline 229 yards away. The hay is high, about ankle deep. I can't get a clear consistent profile, he's bobbing up and down at difference locations so I can't get a standing shot. Finally he crosses an open area in the field, a crawler shot. I send the 55 Nosler BT. Heard the thump! He's down.

Go figure - make that shot and miss the easy one!!!

PS - large male - real heavy weight
An hour later another one appears at 230 yards, a crawler, again in high hay but I have a better shot since I'm at the high end of the field looking down. Sent another 55 Nosler BT - Nailed him.
About 20 minutes later another guy appears - he's standing at the edge of the treeline - 215 yards - slightly obscured by the high hay. A very make able shot with this rifle but I prefer the crawler shot - gives me more lateral margin of error. But he isn't moving. I know I should wait until he starts crawling but I want to check some other areas so I sent another 55 Nosler at him. I missed!!
No excuses - no wind - very accurate rifle - I'm an old man but I practice a lot - conclusion: bad can of sardines I just eat.
