Chucks on the rise?

On a positive note, I’ve noticed there is way more fresh dug out chuck holes on my farm this year. Got the first cutting done this year and its not hard to find a chuck hole on the tractor let me tell ya! Over a dozen holes in one little field. What better way to spend a quiet evening with my trusty 6mm br 33grs A2230 and 60gr sierra hp. Loving this combo. Any of you boys seeing more chucks? They are around!

The areas I have hunted for last 20 + years keep producing despite a heavy coyote presence, many in these areas especially Amish run the coyotes with hounds and drive them one weekend drive prior to deer gun season netted over 100 in a weekend. Farming practices have remained the same with beans and alfalfa and hay prime crops insures a gh population. But the biggest factor I think was the past few winters were mild and gh's stayed active and healthy during them. Not likely to run out of shooting soon, my take.

Hoping so. And id like to think all that k9 trapping is helping all the small game. Nice to see baby grouse, turkey, rabbits. A lot of fisher running the mountains here in NY.

We are over run in N. IN with them. 352 confirmed dead here, still going strong. We shot 197 last year and thought no way we'd see even 50. Man were we wrong, I'd say the wood chuck population is healthy.

Don't know if it lack of yotes or that we do not get winters anymore. I think it is more of the latter personally.

Drk that is some shootin. Very cool. I will say this. It gives me a chuckle sometimes, its not flat here. Rolling hills and such. Theres no far shooting for me most times. They always seem to have holes just over the rise, in the dip, around the corner. Alwayd just out of sight. They seem pretty darn smart. And most are in the stone walls. They like to dig in the gravel.

On Sunday I was chatting with a couple NW Ohio farmers, we agreed there seemed to be fewer this year in our area

In this area there are far fewer coyotes, and seeing more rabbits, red fox, and a few Chucks but not in huntable numbers. JMO.WD

FEWER coyotes!!?! That is great news. What is the reason
We have a very talented bunch of fellows that have been night hunting with thermals in the area. They have very good equipment, excellent hunting and marksmanship skills. And have the night hunting down to a science. Haven't seen or heard a coyote in the Township for months now. 8 or 10 years ago a fella could drive to town and back (16 mile round trip) and see up to a dozen of them on a given day. I'm liking it. WD

The Amish are hammering them in the counties I hunt in,they have the best thermals money can buy, and they can shoot.I keep after them on my 2000 acre nature preserve, I live in,shy of 500 give or take a few..Pictures taken of 90%.

Ground hog population here remains a steady low compared to 90’s and before.
I have witnessed more than a few “on the rise”, you have to hit them hard and they will rise, cartwheel and do all kinds of good stuff.

These days I use the 220 Swift or the 22-250 the most and the 223ai if I’m trying to keep the noise down. In the past, I’ve killed quite a few with the 6mm ai and both the 240 & 257 Weatherby.

Yes, of course we can own them. I shoot with a guy that has them hanging off the end of most of his rifles. I’ve been shooting ground hogs since the 1970s, I’m not sure how they would “change my game”.
To each his own….

Yeah only in relation to sound. If you shoot rodents without time to cool it would only serve to aggravate you between barrel heating faster and mirage off it and barrel, not to mention dirty.

First time I put my Ultra9 on a 22-250 and fired, big ol smile. Not only with muffs on did it sound like a 22rf, the recoil felt like it. It will be great for coyote work, but rodents... not unless it's pretty slow shooting. I would not thread existing barrel, but on those with it has its uses.

30 years ago me, my best friend, and my cousin would kill hogs all summer on our farm and a few neighboring farms (west-central PA). We would regularly kill about 100 - 150 hog per year on less than 200acres. And then next year we'd do it all over again. About the time we all graduated high school the coyotes moved in, now if my dad kills 5 groundhogs a year it's impressive.

edited to add: While this is great news for baler tires and hay wagon axles it sucks for my Kimber in .204 Ruger that I bought as a graduation gift to myself 20 years ago. That thing hasn't seen the light of day in years.

not as many alfalfa fields dn here in Ky in the county I live in Barren, there use to be 104 dairy farms in a block where I live now there is 1 all in corn beans wheat, I have several in the barns I just let them live they eat and play in my yard, along with several deer come up at night and play in the yard also, not as keen on shooting them as I use to be, I guess growing older has stopped me

I know it works. Trapping is THE way to reduce all nest raiders! Any fisher in your area?

Then , use one and report back,I take it you never used one when hunting maybe you have, some states cannot own them , reason for asking.Your answer most assuredly indicates you probably haven't used them, could be wrong, could be right. But one who has used them can absolutely vouch it's a total game changer.
