Chrony Advice:

Gentlemen, and I use that term loosely .... :p
Coming from airguns, there is considerable muzzle blast when you push a pellet down range with 3,331PSI of air pressure behind it ... as a matter of fact, you can seriously injure a person with the muzzle blast and no pellet. Anyway, when I would chrony, placing the chronograph about 3 feet in front of the barrel, I had no effects on the readings from the muzzle blast.
Is this a good distance away for .223?
Thanks;

Pgh Pappy

Get a LabRadar and forget it. Just my two cents Tommy Mc

Duly noted you two enablers!!!!! :) That thing is awesome. I'll take that two cents and apply towards the $550 for chrony ..... but I have a few other things to buy first. I'm not handloading yet, but this chrony looks like a must have if I go that route. Thanks for the advice. Pgh Pappy

This, or a Magneto-speed would be the easiest setup. If you do wind up getting a conventional chronograph though, I'd recommend an 8-10' distance. That should keep it safe from most powder debris and muzzle blast (but not projectiles :)). Also, make sure that you maintain that distance each time you use it. A length of string packed with the unit to set the distance will help keep it honest.

I set my Chrony at 14 feet every time. You will notice if the shock wave is triggering the chrono. For handguns, I set the first screen at 10 feet and noticed I was getting some false readings. Changed it to 12 feet, and the problems went away.

Now that's what I call some good chrony advice. I have a Pro-Chrono and software to run through my laptop ..... for now I'll set it out to 12' to 15' and shoot it ... :) I mean, shoot through it. In regard to getting out and shooting .... almost finished setting up my rifle ..... should be very soon. The weather is finally breaking here too .... I hope. Pgh Pappy

First choice Labradar. Down side = price but you can use it with handguns.
Second choice Magnetospeed. Doesn't work well with most handguns.

My wife bought me a new chrony for Xmas. The old one (actually the 3rd one) died a terrible death by firing squad. Anyhow, this new one is by Caldwell and they put the actual reader on top instead of the bottom. It can be read by your phone so you can put it at distance. The great part is chrony's die, because you always shoot lower than you aim at 12 or 13 feet. With the reader on top, that can't happen.

I have a pro -chrono and it works okay but can get finicky in the direct sun. The pro side is it is cheap and I can use it for my arrows as well
