Chronograph, which one?

I am in the market to purchase a reliable chronograph. I have recommendations for the Oehler 35P but also see that the PVM-21 is held in extremely high regards, although it is expensive. From the reports, changing light does not seem to affect the PVM-21 like it does the others because of the way it samples ambient light. Does anyone have much experience with these? Thank you in advance.

check out the new MagnetoSpeed chronies. Optical chronos will be obsolete compared to these.

I have owned my Oehler 35P for going on 17 years and it has worked flawless and i totally trust it for accuracy. Only knock against it is the time needed to set it up. But once set up you can be assured of getting accurate readings for speed, SD and ES.

shibumidog: Take a few minutes & checkout the Magnetospeed at www.magnetospeed.com. Advantages? (1) Complete setup time is about 2 minutes from the time you take the unit out of the box 'til you fire the first shot. (2) Never, ever have to walk in front of the firing line. (3) Works under any and all light conditions. Can even be used on an indoor range. (4) Can be used from the bench, off-hand, sitting or prone. (5) It can be used during a pouring rain, if you are under a roof, naturally, and nothing will get wet. (6) Not a chance of hitting the sending unit if it's one of the ones mounted downrange on a tri-pod. (7) Made in the USA.

Give me more time and I'll think of even more advantages. ;)

I'll be getting the Magnetospeed when the new version comes out in a few weeks. The new bayo will easily work with muzzlebrakes and barrels up to 2" diameter they tell me.

I remember seeing a thread on the magnetospeed around here some time ago. There was a question about what impact it would have on barrel harmonics.

For those that are using it, have you noticed any impact on the precision of your loads by having the magnetospeed clamped to your barrel?

Might be another toy I'll have to get. :) :(

I have the PVM-21 and have used it for 2 years now. It has worked in rain, snow, cloudy conditions, sun, etc... and has been very accurate. It's also very easy to get setup and it's cool being able to record multiple shot strings and then play back later.

That being said, it's fragile (it's tipped over twice on grass and shattered the frame)- the PVC they used is very stiff and brittle. I was able to easily repair it with some plastic epoxy though. It's also not very portable. Doesn't fold up or anything, so it pretty much sits on it's tripod taking up space when it's not in use.

If I were going to buy another one, I would be looking really closely at the Magnetospeed. I've read nothing but good about it and it seems like a steal at the listed price.

.

No change in groups, but there is a shift in POI.

On my Magneto Speed I have noticed a shift of POI about 1-2" high, groups are good (if I do may part), super fast to set up. My only problem was with the retractable cable that they supplied. The pins are just a bit small and therefor don't work, the extra cable that came with the unit works perfectly and I love it. I have used it on my 6.5x47 Lapua and .338 Lapua, both have muzzle brakes, I just clamp it down behind the brake and everything seems to work just fine. I really like mine and it goes to the range with me all the time.

I have a New Ohler 35P and it works great but compared to that Magnetospeed as far as set up time goes...holy cow does that seem nice....I may be selling the Ohler!!

I watched the brief video's, does the unit also give ES or just the SD ?

cigarcop: Digital display shows max and min velocities, average, and SD. I just subtract the min from the max & have my ES.

Just to give anyone who may be interested in the size of the complete unit, the fourth picture is the small Gun Guard pistol case for one handgun. Box measures 14" x 9" x 4.25". Contains everything needed.

I've not had any problems with the pins on the pull out wiring connection. Have never even used the "solid" wiring setup.

+1 for MagnetoSpeed. I have been using it for quite a while now and could not go back to setting up my CED M2 as its just too much hassle compared to the ultra reliable MagnetoSpeed!

Thanks, .....yes quite a bit smaller than the Ohler!!!

We have tested the magnetospeed and it offers a lot of advantages. We are waiting for the new Clasp system to evaluate. The first-generation clamp/mounting strap had some teething issues. But the whole unit, in its box, will fit inside a truck's glove compartment. The unit is quite reliable as long as you have it clamped very securely on the end of the barrel.

I still think the PVM-21 is the most sophisticated unit out there, but it is in dire need of a software upgrade, and it takes longer to set up. Also, we've learned you need to carry a spare fuse with the PVM-21.

A friend of mine that uses this unit (MagnetoSpeed), and he has had them make a adaptor. Well they sent him the new setup that they are coming out with. He loves it, his fclass rifle has a inch and a quarter bbl on it.

Has anybody run a magnetospeed and an oehler side by side (on the same shots)?

I could live with a poi shift if the results were the same.

Been using the Oehler 35P for quite awhile with good results. I taped the 3 cables together with electrical tape about every 12-14 inches which makes setup a lot easier and faster. Don't see a need to change for the few times a year I get it out.

Yes with the Oehler 35 and magnetospeed side by side their was about a 15fps difference. So With the Oehler 20ft from the muzzle and the Magnetospeed at the Muzzle I'd say that's a pretty tight race!

IMO the magnetospeed is more reliable since there is not light conditions to worry about, But the Oehler is a good source I trust both.
