choosing bullet .223 PD

Hit ratios not only vary by the shooter - but probably even more so with the same shooter in changing conditions. For me, any squirrel within 225 yards is probably going to get whacked. Stretch that out to 650+ yards on a day with 25+ mph varying wind and my hit ratio might drop 90% or more. Realistically, as I'm always testing my ability and trying to improve on the long shot - I miss a LOT. On average - I'd guess my ratio is about 30% hits. It is even less than that when I'm concentrating on the ones WAY out there. Nothing more fun than bracketing one and hitting it when holding four feet off for wind. My hit ratio also goes up when using an A/R in really windy weather due to the faster second shot.

Reading about the box of ammo for one squirrel at 983 yards, it reminds me of how I once shot something like 35 rounds at the SAME squirrel (and missed all). He was running around on the snow "way out there" and the wind was moving. I kept trying, thinking I'd throw up a bit of dark earth on the snow to mark my impact. It never happened. The squirrel finally tired. I think of that lucky sucker often.

Any madness to picking "x" bullet for "y" job? So still green as I only shoot paper with the occasional black bird and one coyote that happen to be in the wrong spot while I was practicing.

Not sure if it even matters with this caliber on PD? The OCD in me says pick one with the best BC and mid weight to fight wind??? Fellow shooter has convinced himself to use the lightest weight trying to get the fastest speed. I've worked up and getting good accuracy at 100yds with 53gr V-max. Going to get some 2-300yds practice in and chrono the load before working up something else. I also know one of the other guys shoots the cheapest he can find. Getting close to point that I need to decide and load 1K for a trip.

Shooting Howa 1500, heavy barrel sitting in a Boyds At One stock.
Thanks for your thoughts

In Canada some guys are shooting 75 gr bullets in competition with .223. Run some numbers through a ballistics calculator. Great for wind drift at distance. Don't know what twist you need.

Thanks for all the input! I am going to add, as I haven't researched it yet, is there a big difference between a HP vs. ballistic tip bullet; specifically with the "splatter factor"? I could see where the b.t. may be better with wind drag. I'm not one to pinch pennies and give up accuracy. I would rather each shoot count.

50 TNT works just as well as a 50 whatever else as far as splat factor goes.
Anytime I can find the Nosler 50 TNT or 53 VG, or 50/53 vmax on sale for 10 cents per or less they get bought.

OK, This question id for all you that hunt the PDs regularly. What is the ratio of shots to kills? My wife and I will be going on our first hunt and wondering what to expect. Thanks

IMO there is no good answer for you. How good can you shoot? How good does your weapon shoot?? Personally, I am guessin I get +90% kills.. But someone else may get 90% miss's.. Just too many variables to put a number on this..
