Can anyone shed some light as to how was this finish done on barrel , i just received this barrel and like the finish . The guy i received this from had picked this up with some other purchases , it is a 6PPC barrel , he has no other information on this barrel , there is a name Karl #1. stamped on it. If anyone has an idea , would like to know, want to have this on my barrels.

The first time I saw a barrel with that finish was on barrel done by Dan Doweling, that was in the late 70's. I found out it was called it his " swizzle dick finish. And as PP said I think it was done with a DA sander with the barrel in a slow turning lathe.

Dave Hall used to do this to his br barrels in the 70's, its where he got the nickname the whirlygig barrel man. done with a d.a. sander. Bob White also did his barrels this same finish...

I do it all the time. Different grits and prefinishes give way different results. I like the polished barrel then a da with scotch brite on it. Gives it a good finish. Bead blasted and 80grit is the opposite side. Itll sure shed some heat with all that surface area

Here is a swirl finish I had Kevin Weaver do for me.

And what he calls "snake skin" finish

Thanks for all the reply's , sometimes old methods turn out to be reborn, love the looks and the cost is great when you can do it yourself .

I’ve seen that finish applied with a hand held belt sander and done on a lathe.

I polish some barrels at low rpm in the lathe by pushing 220 to 320 abrasive back and forth quickly to leave a 45 degree path. I think it looks very good for a Benchrest rifle, very much like a cylinder hone finish.
