Chassis Weights

I'm looking at making my own QD chassis weights to help me manage recoil to see impacts/misses. I saw the MDT ones, and they look good, but $60 for 3/4 of a pound? Sheesh, I'm way too cheap and creative to pay that. I'm going to try something pretty redneck soon. Yes, it will be ugly. BUT - it should be functional. I'll hold the picatinny rail top part of the pictured mounts in a molten lead ingot until the ingot sets up enough and cools off. Then it can be clamped onto a picatinny rail mounted on the forearm of my XRS, one on each side, or both could be clamped to the bottom of the forearm.

My only suggestion is to avoid cheap lever clamps. I'm specifically thinking of the ones included in the original Wiser chrono mount, complete junk and come loose. A loose weight will end up on your foot, or it'll get lost in the grass.

Well, the ones I ordered are definitely on the cheap side....I'll see how they pan out. Thanks for your input, rijndael!

Just read your post and trying visualize where the weights would attach. If attaching to a piccatiny rail, Could you use 1" or 30mm scope rings with a section of steel/brass/lead round bar in them. You could use different lengths to adjust the weight and still able to position them at different places on the rail.

Just thinking. :)

Thought about that too. I've already got a bunch kf lead on hand and an ingot mold, so that's what I'm going to roll with for now to see if it works.

I bought 2 sets of MDT chassis M-lock weights, the stock weight, and the steel bag rider from Optics planet with coupons/discounts. Compared to the prices of everything else in this hobby, I don't mind. LOL. Remember your time is worth something as well.

Well, I got two weights made. Will have to get the barrel put on when it arrives and try them out. Pretty redneck, but I don't see why it won't work! Waiting on one more pic rail to come in the mail for the other side.
