Chasing lands during Match????

Hello,

do any of you reload in anticipation of having to chase the lands during a match?

I shoot a 243 win for mid range matches, and i noticed i started loosing accuracy during a match, and i couldnt explain what was going on. Once i got back from the match, i realized that the lands had moved 5 thousands. we had 3 relays of 20, so I probably shot 70 shots including sighters. I have around 550 rounds on the barrel.

I knew the 243 was a barrel burner but having to chase the lands during a match had never even crossed my mind. I will now load 1.5 thousands taller every 15 rounds to keep up with the erosion of the barrel.

does this make any sense?

No, it doesn't make sense. You shouldn't have to chase lands in 3 strings. Something aint right.

How are you measuring to the lands? Could there be a carbon ring stopping you from getting a correct measurement?

A friend of mine calculates he looses .003 per hundred rounds. Not sure an adjustment in a match is called for.

I load at the range the night before the match. Every match's load is slightly different do to conditions and throat wear. Of corse that's only when I am being serious, it is a lot of hassle to bring all that stuff to a match. We aint loading ppc, so the lab scale has to come along.

The loss of accuracy across the course of the match could just be barrel fouling. Assuming you don't have time to clean every 20 rounds

I don't see any F class shooters cleaning between strings in a match. My gun seems to be shooting just as good in the 3rd string of the day as it was in the 1st string of the day. I shoot FTR using a .308, maybe a .243 is different in terms of fouling badly but a buddy of mine that shoots F-Open with us at our local club shoots a 6 X 47 and cleans his gun after every 3rd match (not string) so that means he cleans after 9 strings of 20 shots plus sighters. He is a very good high master shooter that cleans a lot of strings with high X counts so it makes me kinda leary about the cleaning after every string theory.

You mean I can load my PPC without a scale? What do I do, just fill the case up level?

In short range powder throwers are common. Some are using chargemasters. Neither is good enough for 1k br. So you have to bring the lab scale which is a pain. Its big, delicate, and you have to have a stable indoors environment to use it. Much easier to have an outside bench and dump powder from a measure.

I think you will come to a better explanation for the accuracy loss you observed if you will research "density altitude" as its aplied to firearm tuning. To put it plainly, what shot lights out in the morning may shoot poorly in the afternoon. That may also be true in the inverse. The rifle may be out of tune in the morning atmospheric conditions and come into tune in dryer, warmer conditions in the afternoon.
