Changing Grizzly g0709 lathe motor with a variable speed motor?

I am kicking around the idea of replacing my Grizzly g0709 lathe motor with a variable speed motor and wondering if anyone has done this before to this model and what was all needed to complete this?

It's a single phase motor now so I am not sure if I would have to go with a 3 phase motor or a DC motor to do this? Google is not finding anyone that has done this on this model of lathe.

Automation Direct is your friend.
I have several of their Durapulse VFD's and they're excellent value. Great company to deal with.
Not sure about their motor selection, but that might be something you could source second-hand.

A VFD and a 3 phase motor is really the only way to go. No other variable speed system even comes close.

Have done it on a similar lathe and also a milling machine. 2HP on lathe and 3hp and 2HP on universal milling machine.

Your existing motor will have a part number which will tell us what the frame size is. And what it is. 2HP 1800 RPM etc
You can then get an equivalent 3 phase delta motor and connect to VFD (screened cable)

The VFD I use is Hitachi WJ200 series. Not super cheap but very good. If you download the manual it will give you an idea on install.

Do you want an external braking resistor?
Where is the VFD being installed? Enclosure??

You then need to ask yourself how much safety systems you want as that dictates the install and cost (When I press e/stop on mine the VFD STOPS commutation in milli seconds via a safety relay and braking resistor makes sure it stops fast. (ie. Does not make 3 phase power)

Basic install which most people do is very different and does not do that.
I did it as I am an electrician and enjoyed doing it. Removed all old controls that are in the control box and just have the VFD.

Pretty sure you will find info on Practical Machinist forum or the Hobby Machinist forums for basic installs. Have a look there

I have that lathe. Id call grizzly first and ask them if they offer a replacement 3 phase motor.
