changing caliber suggestions for 223 rifle

I have a nice custom bolt action chambered in 223. It's kind of redundant as have have other 223's.

Considering changing the barrel to a new caliber. (Like 300 hammr, blackout etc)

Use it for range fun an limited hunting.

Any suggestions?

Another vote for the 6 x 45mm . I just built one on a Remington 700 action , only one hundred rounds so far but I am very impressed .

Sounds like you might be willing to change barrels------opens up quite a few possibilities.

Have you considered the 20 Vartarg ? Maybe even some of the other 20's ?

Enjoy your choice.

Wellll, how about a 284 Whiteout. 7mmx45. Exceeds everything a 300BO does except super heavy subsonics? :)

Make your own caliber. I took a 6.8 SPC and had a reamer made that moved the shoulder forward with less taper and took a bunch of taper out of the cartridge. I also opened up the neck to .30 cal. Shoots 110 VMax at 3150 f.p.s. I originally built it for an AR so I could shoot it out of a standard M4, but then I noticed I had an extra Savage 12 receiver laying around. So why not. Draw Back! Dies are $250 from Hornady and the $$ for the reamer.

I should add I need to have this cartridge feed from 223 magazines

.20 Practical

You can use your existing brass (and maybe even the sizing die with a new bushing). It will mag-feed fine as it is basically a 20-223 Rem.

Whitley has figured this out. Great P-Dog round and very accurate (might just shoot better than it does in .223 Rem)

And these 100-yard groups are with three differerent .20 Practical AR uppers. Not bad for semi-autos...

I never considered necking down when I built my 6 x 45 recently, that 20 Practical really has my interest now . I had a 20 Tac at one time and enjoyed it , looks like I need to revisit the 20 caliber . Thanks for posting the article .

Don't waste your time with the 300Hammr. If you want a short .30 caliber cartridge then easiest to go with 300BO... you can reload it and match the velocity of 300Hammr and also have ability to shoot subsonics, and you can buy ammo off the shelf anywhere. I have several rifles chambered in this cartridge and it is best suited for an AR15 to be used for hunting deer or pigs. It wouldn't be my first choice for plinking because at best with reloads the accuracy is acceptable. From a plinking perspective the .30 cal bullets are expensive (at least 2-3 times the amount of material on the lightest bullet = 2-3x price... 223 Rem 55gr FMJ is $0.09/bullet, whereas 300BO 120gr Speers TNT is $0.19/bullet).

Caliber considerations are .17 cal (bullets are 17gr - 25gr), .20 cal (bullets are 30gr - 45gr), .224 cal (40gr - 55gr), and 6mm (60gr - 75gr). All of the cartridges below are typically considered varminting rounds so they utilize lighter bullets going extremely fast... Think BIG SMILE with Minimal Recoil.

If you are locked into the .223 size bolt head / case size and you are going to be mostly plinking / range toy and want something different then consider four (4) different case length options:

.204 Rugger (longer case then .223)

.223 Parent Case Options:
1) 6x45 (very accurate and big enough for hunting pigs and whitetail)
2) 20 Practical
3) 17 Remington

.222 Rem (extremely accurate)

.221 Fireball Parent Case Option:
1) .221 Fireball
2) .20 Vartarg
3) .17 Fireball
