Chambering Question

Hi all.

I am new to the world of shooting. Started out in F Class 2 years ago. Being interested in all things technical I have a question about Chanbers, more specifically long action chambers.

I have recently purchased a rifle chambered in 284win in a long action. Tinkering down on my shed I measured the COAL which was 2.900" touching the lands.

My way of thinking (remember newbie ) would be that the reamer would be cut longer on the throat to allow for the longer VLD bullets, while not sacrificing case capacity?

I just noted that on touching the lands the bullets ( 180gn Berger's ) projected an very long way into the case, perhaps a 1/4" pass the neck give or take a bit.

Cheers

Craig

Hello
The 284 Winchester cartridge was originally designed for a short action rifle in fact it was a Win. lever action. Please forgive me but i can not remember the model number of the gun. Your chamber was probably cut with a 284 reamer ground to the original design. You can have your chamber throated to get the full potential from your long action and case capacity.

It was the model 88 and the model 100 Winchesters that were factory chambered in that caliber. The max OAL for that round in factory load was 2.80". I have a personal rifle I did in that caLiber I long throated to take the Barnes 165's to a max OAL of 3.200". Shoots great and no loss of velocity and no gain in pressure. I can redo yours.

Just a note to consider... With a loaded round, can you shake the case and hear the powder shake? The reason I ask is if there is room in the case for the bullet to be seated that far without sacrificing powder capacity, it's really not an issue, unless your goal is to set a world record bench rest group with that particular rifle.
