chambering cost

What do you guys charge to thread/chamber a barrel for a Savage target action? I can get a good price on a blank but it may be cheaper in the long run to get a prefit so I wasn't sure. It would be a standard 308 Winchester chamber.

That's a tough question because there are so many possible varibles. Normally you can probably buy a threaded/chambered barrel cheaper than having a blank chambered / threaded. The flip side is that with a normal threaded/chambered barrel, you are getting the standard leade/throut & the chamber is probably a smidge longer than minimum. By having someone thread/chamber the barrel, you can use a different reamer IF you were looking to shoot 1 specific bullet. Otherwise a reamer tailored for that bullet. It will definitely not be cheaper because unless someone has exactly what you're looking for, good reamers are $140 or more.

If you are looking at cost ONLY. A Criterion pre-fit from Jim Briggs is $300 plus shipping. Barrel nut wrench, action wrench, and go gauge are a tad over $100.
The next barrel (assuming a different cartridge) would be the cost of the barrel plus around $30/35 for the go gauge.

I'm not looking for anything special other than a typical 308 win. barrel for a switch barrel striker I'm building. Probably just run some 150-168 grain pills just to plink some steel with. The blank is a Bergara CM. While I would also rather have SS like I said the price is right on it. Will also need to get it threaded for a muzzle brake. Wish I new someone around me with a lathe as I would love to learn to chamber/thread and If I screwed it up I wouldn't be out much. Really need to make friends with someone around my area that has the patients to teach a newbie.

This is a loaded question. If you are asking what a smith charges to chamber, thread, crown a barrel or whats the cheapest way to do something. Its comparing apples and oranges. Our fees are listed on our website, but if you are looking for the cheapest route, be careful.

I can also attest that there is a difference between a barrel threaded for *your* action instead of being threaded for the average action. I don't see major differences in accuracy, but repeatability of zero is far better with a barrel done by my smith.

I agree completely with what your saying and If I can come in at nearly the same price for a "custom" chambered barrel it is well worth it as I have factory and custom guns and realize the value and detail that goes into the customs. For a standard 308 chambering and threading for a non timed muzzle brake I was figuring somewhere in the 250 range just based off of what I've found online but figured I'd get some input from actual smiths on what they are charging.

This topic comes up on a lot of different forums, as well as other gunsmithing related charges for work. The one common thing I notice is the "quotes" given for XYZ work by posters that don't actually perform the job, are usually quite a bit lower than the price charged by the guy actually doing the cutting. Usually starts with something like "any good gunsmith should be able to do that for...."

The devil is always in the details, and all that has to happen is for the customer to want a little something special done to his "pre-fit" barrel to drive the cost up. As posted earlier, there are several variables that come into play that may change the actual cost.

If you simply want to screw a barrel on and go shoot, then there are several options available, like Criterion, Sharp Shooters Supply, etc. To have a blank fit, and threaded on the other end, is a different story.
