chamber dimensions

question from a reloading neophyte. say you have a new gun/chamber. what are the various methods you use to find the lands, i.e. OAL? i have a stoney point "chamber-all" gauge, and am curious about other methods/devices are being used, and their reliability/accuracy. thanks in advance for the feedback.

In my opinion this one works well. Sinclair Seating Depth Tool with Standard Guide
Your Price: $ 28.95
But what i do to check is put 1 locking piece onto my cleaning rod of the correct size insert and close bolt with the cleaning rod inserted gently down the muzzel till it rests on the bolt face lock the collar then remove the bolt and put a projectile in the chamber pushing it in gently till it touches the lands again put the other locking piece on the rod and do the same proceedure that will give you an exact overall length from bullet tip to base. Seat the bullet to that length and check against the other measurement as it could be out if you don`t have a case that has been fired in that chamber.
