CFe black

I was on hodgdon website looking for some info. Came across a picture for a new powder CFE Black made for the 300 blackout. Says it a sperical powder.

They've published data for CFE BLK in 300 Blackout, anyway, online. Not sure about other cartridges yet.

PS

6.8 Rem SPC, 7.62x39, 25-35, 222 Rem, 221 Fireball, 218 Bee, 22 K-Hornet, 22 Hornet, 17 Fireball, 17 Hornet, and 17 Ackley Hornet as well.

CFE BLK is a little bit of a disappointment as a cartridge named powder.

The cartridge is velocity challenged and this powder takes that to a new low. The best thing that can be said about it, is that it's probably impossible to get in trouble with it. I tried everything I could think of to flatten a primer and never did. Unless it behaves different in smaller bores, it's very forgiving.

One thing to be aware of, is that without compression velocity swings are high. In this regard it seems unstable. But as I said, I actually tried to get in trouble and could not flatten a primer. This seemed at odds with a 300 fps velocity swing.

For supers it runs reasonably clean considering its low pressures, but at it's highest velocity it will be 10-15% less than most other powders.

For subs it really needs to be compressed or wide does not begin to describe your ES. It is not uncommon to have 200 fps. This becomes a problem because the powder itself is dense, so you always have low case fill.

It's best use is carbine gas systems, where the added length, allows longer burn time leaving less garbage in the action and gas in your face. I found pistol gassed and suppressed very unpleasant to shoot more than a few rounds.

Besides being slow and dirty, it also tends to be comparatively loud in short barrels and out the ejection port.

Again it seems it's best use will be carbine gassed AR's, with a small gas port or adjustable block. Since its generous on the gas, it will cycle anything.

Your mileage will vary, I was disappointed.
