ceramic bore liners for barrels?

this idea seems logical but not in use. so I goggled and found a few mentions under paintball guns. what are the pros & cons? any discussion would be appreciated.

I would think that using ceramic for gun barrels would be impractical if not downright dangerous! Ceramic, being very hard, like carbide), would shatter with the impact of the bullet from a center-fire rifle. Just my opinion!

thanks scout1, should have searched 'ceramics' first. stephenperry got right to the crux of it. but first to believe that a liquid coating will suffice in lieu of a ceramic insert/barrel I find laughable. I was pondering heat/metal characteristics and it appears that ALL of the problems that can be solved by increase temperature in a reaction, weather in gun barres or car engines, are solved by adapting to ceramics. It's of course a matter of vision, time & money. The new manufacturing materials would create a new demand to replace current guns and this would far exceed changing the angle of the cartridge shoulder.

the problem with shattering was my major concern. years ago Isuzu and Mazda were experimenting with ceramic liners in their engines, rotary and diesel, so this was not something not thought about. was wondering if new combinations of nano tech and/or composites had been looked at. not to mention pure composites such as Smokey Yunick used in his 'adiabatic engines'. Of course if memory servers they were bought and buried by Chrysler.

Hey, thanks butch, you know when you go to a new forum you always wonder who the smartest person there is, of course you never have to wait long for them to pop up and tell you who they are. So now i know it's you. blue

Blue,
I guess that I should have noticed the amount of post and that you were new. This bore paste has been discussed many times. Sorry to step on your toes, I just hate to see people taken in by products such as those.
What is the significance of bluealtered? Is it an altered coupe or roadster maybe?

The military had a ceramic liner in their M-60 machine gun. The new version that the Navy is using supposedly has a full bore liner that's good for around 15,000 rounds. Some of the tests I've seen had the contractors firing 850 rounds with a single trigger pull and no malfunctions. Of course, a machine gun isn't going to be shooting sub moa groups either. I would think that for a commercial application, the price might be a bit out of our range. The theory does have some interesting applications.

two years ago, when richer, I bought a ceramic 6' chef's knife from Kyocera. about $150 discounted. It leaves steel blades in the dust as; holds edge for at least a year, cuts much finer, and blade cleans like oiled glass. Also have a ceramic knife sharpener that is superb. And no I'm not a shill for the ceramic industry.

If it's Stellite you're talking about, no, it is not ceramic. 'Stellite' is a family of high cobalt, metal) alloys.

Darn it butch, i think i better take a step back as well. My apologys for my last statement. I'll try to do better, yes the bluealtered is from my last farewell race car, i started with an altered 42 years ago, and thought i would end it the same way.

It was a lot of fun, but it's over and now i'm back to my other first love, firearms. I have a lot to learn and this looks like a great place to do it. Thanks, blue

Asa,
My brain housing group must have been out of battery. For some reason, I had thought that the Stellite was ceramic. I have learned something new.:thumb:
As to the Mk.43, it still has a Stellite liner, just not sure as to how far it extends inside the barrel. Saco or US Ordnance,?) supposedly did some additional heat treating or such to extend barrel life.

Blue,
I have been through the racecar{drag cars, off road cars, and sports cars] along with show trucks and cars. I enjoyed it and still appreciate the nice ones, but my money is in rifles.
Welcome to the forum.

Stellite is used in the nuclear power industry for critical valve seats. Extremely tough and difficult to machine.
