Cerakote questions

I want to do my first Cerakote project.
My rifle is a Savage long action. Can I take the rifle apart and Cerakote the parts then put it back together?
Or should I spray the entire barreled action?

I just ordered my cerakote last night. But i took everything apart, including the bolt, and had it blasted with 120grit aluminum oxide. i plan on painting everything and puting it back together. Mine is a savage target action w/o barrel connected.

P.S. If you are looking for some 120grit aluminum oxide(what NIC suggests) i had to buy a 50lbs bag and only used 5lbs :P. I could give you a deal on it but shipping could be a pain in the a$$.

Hey, I would spray the action and barrel together. Otherwise you might run into some probs with paint on the barrel shoulder. But then you could always tape the area up before spraying. Watch the barrel crown when blasting!! Dont bake your stock let it air dry!!!! I had one crack a little but was able to fix with devcon. I was trying for that "optimum" cure that the instructions were talking about. I like the Cerakote finish its very durable. Matt

What is the consistancy of Cerakote like? I am doing some practice with an airbrush i havent used for years but i dont know what paint to use to try to simulate cerakote.

squirrelduster, you can leave the action/lug/bl in one piece. Cerakote makes a bake / or no-bake formula. Brownell's has it. Applying is not rocket science but some prep really helps.

I built my own oven-it has to bake at 250 deg for 2 hours.

1st -disassemble every part as much as necessary/possible, mask with tape as necessary,

2- blast with Aluminum oxide 100-120 grit. I got mine & blast gun at Tractor Supply for not much. You'll want to seal the bbl & the chamber well. Don't AO blast the crown /bore area, or mask it off.

I use a fired piece of brass in chamber to protect bore from ao blast, with brass wire through the empty primer hole thru barrel + extend 10" or so to allow action & bbl to later hang on a hook in the drying cabinet from the wire. plug bore when ao blast (earplug, balsa wood to fit, etc).

3- After ao blast, blow off, spray with Brownells TCE (or brake cleaner, I think would work), handle only with nitrile type gloves after.

4- I use an airbrush to spray, then hang, bake, allow to dry overnight & presto. Cerakote techs say you can't successfully spray a 2nd coat on a dry painted surface-so one coat is the deal. pretty sure I used acetone to clean up.

suggestion, do a dry run to be sure all items fit w/o touching in cab, while handling etc. maybe you want to practice on a starter gun 1st....

good luck!

well i just got my Cerakote last night and i am hanging everything in the oven now just for the sake of making sure everything fits well enough. I will be painting tonight. ;D :o

well i screwed it up. I had to transfer all the pieces from my neighbors where i painted them to my home where i was going to cook them. I let them sit for a hour and a half after spraying and thought they were dry but when i went to transfer them some of the corners of the pieces smudged. So i let them soak in acetone and im going to paint them later today when my neighbor gets home. Luckily nothing happened to the barrel i just need to paint the action again. :P

WELL, it was a success. I baked it this morning. It looks good but i havent put it through any durability tests, i dont plan to so i will have to see how it holds up just through regular wear. I have half a bottle left of cerakote so i grabed a couple knives from my dad and ive got a knife to coat and i told some friends to find whatever they want to be cerakoted so i will have another run with it.

The action is competely put together but the barrel isnt on the action yet. and it went together smooth as can be.

I will try to get some pictures up, my girlfriend might have taken her computer on a trip for the weekend though and its got my camera memory card in it.

Finnaly got some pics of the thing.
