I recently purchased a Lithgow LA101 in .22LR to set up for NRL22 competition which has recently started up here in Australia. Topped it off with an Athlon Midas Tac 6-24x50 on a locally made 20MOA offset rail. Took it for it's first outing to the range last weekend and did some group shooting at 25, 50 and 100 metres with a variety of ammo including: CCI SV, SK Standard+, SK Rifle Match, Eley Club, Eley Club and Eley Standard (sold in the USA as CMP bulk). I run the SK Standard+ ammo in my CZ457 and it shoots really well so it was the first ammo I tried. It shot really well at 25 and 50m but was producing 3 and 4 inch groups at 100m. I also had at least 3 misfires in each box of ammo. The SK rifle match produced nearly identical results with a similar number of misfires.
Thinking that the rifle must have a problem I was going to head home and lodge a warranty claim when my son suggested trying the CCI Standard Velocity. We keep thousands of the CCI SV on hand and run it through all our .22lr pistols but I had never bothered trying it in a rifle due to the accuracy I had been getting from the SK ammo in my CZ 457 and 455. I'm glad he suggested it because not only did it shoot well at 25m and 50m but it turned in repeatable sub 2 inch groups at 100 (109 yards).
Intrigued by the performance of this ammo I hooked up the chrono and ran 35 rounds through it to find an average velocity of 1071 fps (box says 1070 so that was nice), ES of 43 FPS (High 1092, Low 1049) and a SD of 11. So at $5.50 (Aussie Dollars) a box I had ammo that was good enough to run with. The SK Standard+ runs $13.00AUD a box and the Rifle Match runs $16.00AUD a box here.
I ran the SK Rifle Match over the chrono firing another 35 rounds (10 rounds before starting the chrono to season the barrel with the new lube) and apart from getting another misfire in that 35 rounds I had an ES of 78fps and an SD of 16. The cheap CCI Standard outperformed it both in groups and ballistic uniformity.
I am going to run the SK ammo over the chrono out of my CZ457 next weekend and see what I get. Given the fact I can hold a 4 inch group at 200m (219 yards) with the CZ/SK combo I can only assume that the performance from the CZ will be much more uniform. I guess the Lithgow just doesn't like the SK ammo. I should also point out that I Have never had a misfire with any SK ammo in my CZ457 or 455.
The local gunshop has a heap of CCI Green Tag for sale at the moment that nobody is willing to pay the price for but given the performance of the CCI Standard Velocity I might grab 100 rounds just to test. Probably wasting my money but I want to know.
Anyway - it has been interesting and my stash of CCI Standard will now get used in my Lithgow as well as my handguns.
