CCI Standard Velocity Surprising Results

I recently purchased a Lithgow LA101 in .22LR to set up for NRL22 competition which has recently started up here in Australia. Topped it off with an Athlon Midas Tac 6-24x50 on a locally made 20MOA offset rail. Took it for it's first outing to the range last weekend and did some group shooting at 25, 50 and 100 metres with a variety of ammo including: CCI SV, SK Standard+, SK Rifle Match, Eley Club, Eley Club and Eley Standard (sold in the USA as CMP bulk). I run the SK Standard+ ammo in my CZ457 and it shoots really well so it was the first ammo I tried. It shot really well at 25 and 50m but was producing 3 and 4 inch groups at 100m. I also had at least 3 misfires in each box of ammo. The SK rifle match produced nearly identical results with a similar number of misfires.

Thinking that the rifle must have a problem I was going to head home and lodge a warranty claim when my son suggested trying the CCI Standard Velocity. We keep thousands of the CCI SV on hand and run it through all our .22lr pistols but I had never bothered trying it in a rifle due to the accuracy I had been getting from the SK ammo in my CZ 457 and 455. I'm glad he suggested it because not only did it shoot well at 25m and 50m but it turned in repeatable sub 2 inch groups at 100 (109 yards).

Intrigued by the performance of this ammo I hooked up the chrono and ran 35 rounds through it to find an average velocity of 1071 fps (box says 1070 so that was nice), ES of 43 FPS (High 1092, Low 1049) and a SD of 11. So at $5.50 (Aussie Dollars) a box I had ammo that was good enough to run with. The SK Standard+ runs $13.00AUD a box and the Rifle Match runs $16.00AUD a box here.

I ran the SK Rifle Match over the chrono firing another 35 rounds (10 rounds before starting the chrono to season the barrel with the new lube) and apart from getting another misfire in that 35 rounds I had an ES of 78fps and an SD of 16. The cheap CCI Standard outperformed it both in groups and ballistic uniformity.

I am going to run the SK ammo over the chrono out of my CZ457 next weekend and see what I get. Given the fact I can hold a 4 inch group at 200m (219 yards) with the CZ/SK combo I can only assume that the performance from the CZ will be much more uniform. I guess the Lithgow just doesn't like the SK ammo. I should also point out that I Have never had a misfire with any SK ammo in my CZ457 or 455.

The local gunshop has a heap of CCI Green Tag for sale at the moment that nobody is willing to pay the price for but given the performance of the CCI Standard Velocity I might grab 100 rounds just to test. Probably wasting my money but I want to know.

Anyway - it has been interesting and my stash of CCI Standard will now get used in my Lithgow as well as my handguns.

I have shot the best groups out of my mgm barreled contender with that ammo. When ammo goes back to normal I plan on stacking too much.

I only use CCI standered velocity any more in my rifles.... For pistol right now just whatever I have or can buy is good enough.... The CCI seems to run great in every rifle I own... I don't know if it is true but I have been told the same thing that SV wasn't good enough to be green tag and blazer wasn't good enough to be SV... For the price during normal times it's hard to beat.... It also has become hard to find....

I can believe sv does well. The Subsonic HP shoots amazing in most of my rifles. It used to be cheap, but it's been hard to find since the 2013 scare.

As several on here have said, CCI Standard is all I use in my rifles and pistols. I run suppressed on both and the Standards are super quiet and very accurate. My Savage MKII is hell on squirrels, raccoons and rabbits. .

Just repeated my chrono tests using the SK Standard Plus in my CZ457. ES of 31 fps and SD of 12. No misfires either. I can only surmise that the SK ammo is experiencing marginal ignition in the Lithgow and not in the CZ. That said the CCI Standard is that close to the SK ammo in performance that I don't think I'll be spending the money on SK anymore. Still haven't tested the Green Tag but from everyone's comments I don't expect too much of it and it's even more expensive than the SK.

Did ammo testing over the years. Threw some out for various reasons. CCI comes out on top a lot. Prefer cci standard vol to green tag due to cost, but in high volicity, blazer in 50 round boxes is my go to. Blazer in 50 rd boxes is slightly better than blazer in the bulk packs. Green tag seems to do better in barrels with match chambers than standard vol In my barrels with field chambers, standard vol is slightly better.

I have been shooting a variety of rimfire rifles and hand guns for many years and I can honestly state that there is absolutely no consistency with any ammo, even match ammo, from lot to lot. This is why Lapua test center in Mesa Arizona offers a service to test your rifle against a specific lot to see what shoots best in your rifle. Once you find the right lot you buy case(s) of it if you want to be competitive. My experience with CCI SV ammo is that in the last few years it is not as consistent as in the past.

Not the most accurate ammo in every gun in every instance, but for overall results in a wide variety of handguns and rifles, CCI SV is hard to beat without spending a good bit more money. I had my first non-fire with CCI SV in the last year and I've bought it by the case for a good while.

For the non-competitor, accuracy is good and it functions reliably in the eight or ten semi-automatic rifles and handguns I've tried it in, something I can't say for other similarly priced or lesser priced ammo like Aguila and others.

I have shot it in my 52D with excellent results. In my S&W 41, it's not so good. For almost the same price per round, I prefer Aguila SE, and shoot CCI SV for practice only, but not at matches.

Shot 100 rounds of CCI Green Tag yesterday in my Walther KKM with iron sights at reduced Palma targets and can honestly say that it is better at 100 yds. than Eley black box, SK, or Wolf. I haven't shot any SV but I don't see how it can get any better than the Green Tag.
