cci br-2 primers

Up till now i have been using WLR primers, but i have been reading a fair amount lately about them being very hot and very inconsistent. So i got some br-2 to try to see if i like them, think this was a good move?

BR-2 are great with stick powders in the burn rate of Varget. But in the Canadian Winter they are shit !. When the temp drops down below -10 Celsius ( 14 f ) the BR-2 primers can get the odd Failure to fire.

Besides the Winter issue, they outperform all others in my 308win barrels.

Yea.. I've been having a fair amount of spread so trying to eliminate some.... thought I would try some different primers...

I have less than 1000 CCI primers in my primer vault. I have 10-15,000 Remington and a similar amount of Winchester. I do have the odd 2-3000 each of Wolf and Federal.....I hope this gives you a hint about my choices. I grew up using CCI exclusively. Then I got into competition shooting and hunting. Too many failures at the wrong times....

I always used Winchester until I started shooting long range precision and my rifle wouldn't group with them so I switched to BR2 and they shot much better.

I use Federal 210M for Large Primer and CCI BR4 for Small Rifle Primer. When I switched from Remington / Winchester small rifle primer to the CCI BR4's it cut my SD/ES in half. Ever since then I've been okay paying the price for them.

For all of my 45-70, 45-90, and 40-65 black powder loads I use WLR primers. for my 308,6.5, 270, 30-06 loads I use Fed 210M primers when available and WLR or CCI large rifle. CCI 450 are my choice in the 223 & 6br.

I have been reloading for 50 years and shooting comparatively for 17 of them. I am a silver IBS 1000 yd. shooter and have been lackey enough to set 5, IBS 1000 yd records. I have only shot CCI primers. BR-2 and BR-4 in competition, and standard every thing else, I like them.

If you get a hangfire or fail to fire it's usually not the primers fault. The BR primer has a thicker, tougher cup. It needs seated to the bottom with a slight crush and the firing pin spring needs to be strong. Also it helps it the pin is heavy. That's why BAT made the new pins heavier and gunsmiths have added weights to the pins. Matt

CCI may have improved their process and quality since the mid to late 80s....they hadn't when my wife worked there in 2003 or so. If I see them on sale, I may try a brick or two.....will not buy a sleeve of 5000 until I know they are better than my Remington 7 1/2, 9 1/2, and Winchester WLR, WSR.

Thanks for the info.

I don't think you will see the CCI BR primers on sale. They are very scarce and way more money then a regular primer. Around here they go for $50.00 a thousand. Regular Federals go for about 30.00. Like I said they need seated on the bottom and your gun needs to hit them hard. Matt
