CCI 450 / 6.5x47L

Good afternoon. I need some help. Seems that I got a bad lot of CCI 450 for my newly build HS Precision action, Bartlein Barrel. I can't figure out to post pictures, but the problem is with the primers. Out off 100 primers about 9 didn't ignite or go bang. I would trying out a second time and nothing. I got pictures I can't figure out how to post. Some primers have the normal dimple strike from the firing pin and others seem as if the dimple went outwards. And some of them just would not go bang. I removed the primers from the ones that did not fire and it seemed after looking at them with a magnifying glass as if the chemical component went flash or burnt but there was no bang. Could be a bad batch. I'm usually very OCD when it comes to reloading. Primers were bought from Powder Valley. Anyone else experience this issue.

Had a CCI 400 take 4 firing pin strikes to set it off about a year or so ago.

A rare event. I would look else where for the reason.

I recently installed a Jewell HVR and did the adjustment to it. I will check that also. Going to remove the firing pin and give it a good blast with degreaser, Check for any binding within bolt. I did visually check firing pin protrusion and it looks normal. I'm going to try a different brand of primers. Will update later

Back in the late 90's I had a few failure to fires from Federal 210 Match primers. Once home, I disassembled the rounds and found those misfires were due to no priming mix in the cup. They had the anvil but no mix. Those were the only "bad" primers I've ever experienced.

I contacted Federal and they made good on them. Any other failure to fire was found to be excess headspace due to pushing shoulders back too far.

This is new brass, never been fired. I did check the anvil on the ones I removed, they seemed burnt, but no ignition of powder.

My experience this week. Loaded first 308 with small primer brass and 450's. Older large primer rounds fired 100% as usual then 2/3 fail to fire on new small 450, from same box which I know are fine in a different rifle. On 308 I had set minimal firing pin protrusion to .035" which visibly did not provide adequate penetration on the magnum primer. Firing pin adjusted!

New brass is usually short on headspace. Sometimes as much as .010. Matt
I had some 6.5-284 brass that went .012 short. I ended up "Dasherizing" the whole lot and made perfect brass. To bad the BBL was FUBAR and needed to be replaced.

I know that ignition problems can happen with .010 head space.

had same problem with a Lot of 5000 that got buried on my storage shelves for several years and the % is higher than your experiencing. most wouldnt go off at all others would go off if you recocked bolt and pulled trigger again. Same deal though, the primers looked like they should have gone off (nice indent).
I just threw them away and bought CCI BR4's and they work fine so far in my 6.5x47 and 6Dasher. Dont think caliber had anything to do with it. At first I thought age or storage conditions was the problem but apperantly not. Had .220 firing pin fallon my Panda and newer spring.
Threw them away because I couldnt find any problem with the gun and didnt need problem in middle of a match.

Well I finally got my rifle to function properly. Disassembled firing pin assembly gave it a good clean and degrease, lightly oiled spring and firing pin so no rush would occur. Adjusted the Jewell trigger as per instruction and set it at 8oz, made 2 new pins for the trigger assembly, original rear pin was bent, so I corrected that. Decided to use Federal Match primers and work up the load. Took .5 more grains of powder in order to get the same results when I was using the cci 450. Everything functioned as it should. I still blame the primers thou. I have been reading some bad reviews on CCI primers
