Cataract surgery implants

My eye surgeon has advised that I have my cataracts removed and replaced with dual focus implants. He thinks they would better serve me in my shooting. Has anyone had the dual focus implants, or regular single focus implants, and how has that effected your vision for handgun or rifle iron sights.

I asked this same question here several months ago, and got quite a few good replys. now when I do a search I can't find the thread. Interesting to me also as I will probably have to have this surgery soon. Napsac

Use the Search Function up and to the left next to Help and enter Cataract Surgery. There should be several post there.

Had my right (shooting) eye done about 2 years ago. Greatly improved vision and scores (silhouette). Mine was a single vision more for distance. Works well with scope application and much better for irons also.

i had both eyes done...left eye dominate was done distance...now cannot see iron sights on short guns very well..
right eye done near for book reading...now cannot see sights on a pistol well......
do not know what the correct answer is.
i use computer glasses with shorter rifles, bur get a fuzzy target.
i can still point and shoot a pistol at a pie plate size target and hit it with no glasses at 15yds.

just put a crimson trace on my 1911.....

I had cataract surgery 3 or 4 years ago. Improvement in my distance vision and also night vision was remarkable. (I had been nearsighted all my life.) I discussed single vision vs dual focus (bifocal) implant lenses at length with the Ophthalmologist doing the surgery. Although he had done many bifocal implants and would do them if I requested, some of his patients had experienced halo around lights and other problems with the bifocal implants. Therefore, he was not recommending bifocal implants on a general basis. I also talked to his partner in the practice, the Optometrist that I see on a regular basis, who had just had his cataract surgery. He had opted for single vision implants and uses reading glasses for close work. I decided to go with single vision implants. I cannot comment on use of iron sights since I seldom shoot them anymore. Good Luck! Vic

Like VLCAKC, I also opted for single vision but still ended up with the halos around lights & other anomalies like high sensitivity to oncoming headlights at night. Also the time period of my eyes re-adjusting after being blinded by on coming headlights was noticeably longer. Based on your diagnosis this might not be a problem for you. But, I thought this was worth mentioning. Otherwise, totally happy with results. I can see iron sights better than I could at age 20 :)

single focus on both eyes for distance. some improvement shooting with a scope (36-45 x).LOTS of improvement with irons....really cleared up front sight....myleft eye was more than 20 400 but 400 was high as the chart went...came back to 20 35. still need reading glasses. LT
