Case modifications

After a couple years of reading forum posts and online articles on the qaurter bore iv'e have convinced myself to have one made. And after about a weeks worth of hot and heavy debate with myself (i drive truck so all the time in the world) ive decided on the 250savage AI. So i started lookin at the saami print and came to the conclusion that it would benifit from a small bump in neck length i have oodless of once fired 260lapua brass and the same flavor of virgin 30-06 brass so case forming from those 2 how would i decide on how much neck length to add?

I have a 250 ai and i agree the neck needs to be longer. After fire forming the neck gets even shorter since brass flows from the neck to fill in the larger chamber of the ai. I ended up rebarreling to 22XC which is very close to a 22-250ai but with a 30° shoulder And longer neck. I would like to see 25XC.
The 250ai is quite accurate though

I have always liked a longer neck. 6PPC is around 0.300, 6BR is around 0.330, and a 30BR is around 0.315. I know there are a lot of others with shorter necks, like the 6BRX, 6 Dasher, and the list could go on. They all can be made to shoot extremely well.

My reason for liking a longer neck is freebore length and bullet selection. I have run 80gr to 105 gr bullets in a 6BR.

I will caution you though on making your own brass. Make up a couple of mock cases and section them in half, also do a water weight test and compare it to a case formed from 250 savage brass. I only say this for safety reasons, I have made brass in the past just to prove to myself that it was possible. The end product was just what I wanted, except the case capacity and wall thickness was not what I expected. I lost over 2 grains of capacity and if I would have used a full charge weight, it could have caused serious pressure issues. Here’s a set of 6BRX cases the one on the right was formed from a 6BR case and the one on the left was formed from a 308 win case.

I always yearned for a .244 (6mm Rem) with it's long neck as I thought it may be the perfect case design. Then Al Nyhus started winning with the .30 Wolfpup and it's 0.085 neck and basically disproved a long neck was needed for accuracy.
I have a .250 AI built on a R700 for hunting and with WW brass gives great accuracy. Not sure at the expense of a special reamer (vs. a rental) what you can gain from a longer neck.

Keefe300 in post #5 is dead on.

Neck length comes in to play with bullet selection. A longer neck comes in handy when shooting heavier longer bullets. Of course, the trade off is the throat has to be longer in order to take advantage of that combination, allowing the bullet to be solidly in the neck and not encroach into the case capacity.
By the way. If you use 30/06 brass to make a 250 Savage AI, you will loose case capacity due to the much thicker case walls that will be utilized.

You can also run into sizing problems as the walls will be quite a bit thicker toward the top. Cases are designed to have a specific wall thickness to facilitate proper expansion and chamber sealing upon ignition.

Yea thay was going to be my last choice if it came to that. But i shouldnt see to many problems using 260 brass. If i have to sacrifice some space so be it. I found some primed brass on midsouth shooter supply but it must be mystery brass i cant find a brand. The 25 souper in a improved flavor had crossed my mind to.

Along neck is needed for accuracy. TOTALLY false/fake news. Goes right along with you need a caliber minimum of bullets in the neck.
