What is the simplest, most straight forward, easiest, least confusing way to form 6mmAI from Norma 7x57 brass??????????

Step by step PLEASE..........

Thanks.

Here you go..... Be sure to carefully read the part about turning the necks down. You must know your chamber dimensions to do it safely.

Forming 6mm AI brass

I made a bunch of 6mm AI brass from 7x57 RWS brass. Good stuff. Far superior to the Remmy brass I used before.

'far superior' is a pretty strong phrase. I shot a 244 Ackley in 1000 yard Benchrest for about 10 years and used nothing but WW bulk brass. My best buddy used R-P bulk. Both of us won our fair share of fake-wood trophies so it must not have been that bad.

The Internet is a wonderful thing but I think the easy dissemination of advice is one of it's drawbacks. What used to work, still does, but you would not know it from a lot of the 'expert' advice bandied about.

Buy a high quality barrel, chamber it closely, discard any obviously bad cases, choose a good bullet and the correct powder, and a 244 AI will shoot as well or better than most.

And watch the flags.

Over the years we've sure dispatched more then a few p-dogs out past 600yds using both RP & WW brass and we always shot our fire form loads while doing it.

Ray,

You are totally correct in your statement. I had great success with RP brass in my 6AI once I culled 10% during brass prep. My issue with RP brass was that I wrecked it after only a few firings with top end loads. Primer pockets were so lose after 3-4 firings it wasn't usable. I probably push the upper limits trying to drive bullets faster than most. My RWS brass is far superior in terms of toughness. I have +15 reloads on some of it and still going strong. That is my experience. I use WW and RP brass in my std 6Remmy all the time. If I wreck it, I through it away no big deal. However, by the time I size down, turn necks, anneal, and prep the 6AI brass, I prefer to see a few more firings in a life cycle.

I certainly wasn't referring to you when I made that comment about expert advice being bandied about. You are a shooter with experience, while the kind of advice I was referring to is coming from the experts who seldom pull a trigger. I'm sure you see as much of it as I do.

You are right about the RWS brass being harder and lasting longer. That's why I made the comment about chambering the barrel closely. With a tight butt chamber, the WW or R-P brass should last as long as the barrel.

I have not tried 6mm AI but have owned several .244 and 6mm Remington rifles. I currently have two 6mm Remingtons, a 788 with 25.5' H-S Precision barrel and a 40-X with 30' Krieger, both 9'.

My experience is that the Winchester brass is better than Remington and, with annealing every three firings, will go 12-15 firings. My loads are fairly stiff but within SAAMI spec, between 55 and 60 ksi.

I use Lapua brass in .223, 6mm BR, .308, 7.5X55 and .30-'06. If rumors and pictures are true, soon .22-250. :) Lapua is overall the best brass currently made. Sadly, the 6mm Remington is not very popular these days and Lapua is unlikely to accommodate me in that caliber. :,
